In Remembrance of Hana Chan

 

Hana was 15 years old and in the springtime of life when she passed away on October 28, succumbing to Japanese encephalitis. Despite the overwhelming grief, her family still had Hana’s wishes and happiness in mind up to her last moments, allowing her friends from the cosplay community to send her off with one last cosplay event at her wake.

Cosplay: The Art of Awakening, Keeping Olongapo’s Cosplay Community Alive

 

In an admirable show of unity, cosplayers in Olongapo had managed to keep their community alive and well by pooling together their time, talents and resources together to put on a show they can share and be proud of.  With local cosplay group Otaku Maru partnering with Metamorphosis, a receptive events outfit, they presented Cosplay: The Art of Awakening Cosplay Competition, an event that brought their community together as they celebrated the hobby and passion they all shared and loved.

Cosplay has been around in the Philippines since the early 2000s, and although the general populace still has some apprehension or resistance towards this hobby, times have been changing and we are happy that public perception toward cosplay has been improving over the years.  We were then pleasantly  surprised to have found a public high school in Las Pinas that supports cosplay as a hobby for its students.

Some dedicated Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) fans and cosplayers got to organize a fun group shoot a while back at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in Quezon City.  Calling it “Anime Meets Live,” this group of cosplayers got to show their love and appreciation of the Rurouni Kenshin  franchise by portraying characters from both the original anime series as well as characters from the more recent live action movies.  The result was an enjoyable afternoon with feels and fun in abundance, and we at arkadymac.com were there to share and document the moment with them.

We chanced upon a group of cosplayers having fun one warm Sunday at Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in Quezon City.  Every so often, small cosplay groups take it upon themselves to organize simple photoshoots at familiar places.  As cosplay events and conventions may be far in between sometimes, these photoshoots present rare opportunities for some bonding time among friends and present chances to meet new ones.

It was a pleasant afternoon of music, friendship and hearty treats and drinks as we were invited to experience UP Tomo-Kai’s Alimbukay: An AcousTKafe recently at UP Diliman.  Held at the PH 400 classroom in Palma Hall, students and guests were treated to Filipino and Japanese music by young but talented performers as attendees are served free treats and drinks, all for a uniquely refreshing experience.   arkadymac.com is an official media partner for Alimbukay, and we are glad to be able to bring you our coverage of this event organized by UP Tomo-Kai.
