Collecticon 2014

A celebration of the many interesting hobbies people just cant get enough of, Collecticon 2013 was a fun two-day event at the Megatrade Hall 3 of SM Megamall last September 27-28, 2014. The event had a lot of displays featuring toys, model kits, comics, collectibles as well as tons of booths selling related merchandise.  The avid collector or even just the curious passerby certainly would have been delighted to browse through the thousands of varied items sold and displayed by the many exhibitors who supported the event.

Our friend Ms. Faith was there to host the event and did a great job keeping the audience entertained.  There were auctions and games as part of the event, keeping the audience upon their toes and clamoring for more great bargains offered.  Our friends from the Borealis dance group were there to perform on stage with a riveting dance number.  There was also the K-Zone K-pop event that saw many performers and their fans filling the hall with dance and music.

We were there for the cosplayers of course and there were quite a number of them at the event.  We saw them having a great time amongst themselves and having fun having their photos taken by mallgoers and taking photos with them as well.  No harm taking selfies and groupies with them of course.

Worthy of mention was a Guardians of the Galaxy cosplay group which included our friend Lyron.  The crowd just couldn’t get enough of them.

The road to Cosplay Mania ’14 nears its conclusion at the very competitive TORCH 5: Tournament of Champions 5 leg at SM Manila.  Organized by Cosplay.ph, TORCH 5 was an exciting event filled with attractions and surprises, and cosplayers and onlookers alike had an enjoyable time at this free admission affair.   The TORCH series is a prelude to the main event which is Cosplay Mania ’14, the biggest cosplay event in the country.

TORCH_5_2014_SM_Manila_0003

There were lots of fun things lined up that September afternoon, starting off with the cosplay parade which saw the cosplayers going around the mall, inviting the mall goers to come see the event.  Then there were on-stage games like Facepalm the Music where contestants get to guess popular tunes.  In between were song numbers from special performers, which included our friends from cosplay dance group, Borealis.

The event featured two cosplay contests, first of which was the Cyberzone Cosplay Grand Prix Competition sponsored by SM Malls, with nice prizes up for grabs.  Competitors battled it out on stage with impressive costumes and performances.  In the end, Rolando Logronio as Guardian Transformation was named Grand Prize Winner.

After the Cyberzone Cosplay Grand Prix, it was time for TORCH.  The Cosplay Tournament of Champions (TORCH) is a cosplay costume and talent competition that aims to create an energetic and competitive arena for Cosplay on a truly national level by holding cosplay contests in target venues in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.  TORCH Cos Playoffs will be held in key SM Supermalls all over the country to determine the best cosplayers of each region. Winners from the Cos Playoffs get a chance to compete in the TORCH Finals that will take place on Sunday, October 5, 2014 in Cosplay Mania ’14.  Great teams battled it out on stage, but in the end, B’T X-themed Team Kanor Cubes wchich includes our friend Louise Betita won the TORCH 5: SM Manila leg and will be going to Cosplay Mania 14 to battle 8 other teams for the right to be called grand champions.

Lots of cosplayers attended the event who came from all over the country just to take part in the contests and festivities.  And of course the cosplayers enjoyed the event by mixing it up with the crowd.  They posed happily with avid and curious, as well as had their shots taken by photographers.  We were glad to have our Cosplay Model Nicolette join us in covering the event as well.

This is of course just a taste of what is to come at the main event at Cosplay Mania ’14, and of course we at arkadymac.com will be covering it as a media partner.  We hope to see you all there.

7th Philippine Cosplay Convention 2014, Day 2

PCC2014Day2__0024

Sorry for the late release of our post on the second day of the 7th Philippine Cosplay Convention.  It has been quite a hectic but exciting weekend.  Hundreds of cosplayers were in attendance and it was a challenge to try to get as many of them on my camera.

PCC2014Day2__0074

In a year and a half of covering over 70 cosplay events, sometimes it’s hard for me to get excited about any particular convention.  That wasn’t the case for Philippine Cosplay Convention 2014.  I’ve been waiting for it since the last one last year.  Why you ask?  It’s a great event that celebrates a really broad spectrum of cosplay genres and categories where you get to see really fresh and amazing cosplays from all over the Philippines.  Oh, and it’s held at Robinson’s Place Manila too.  I personally think the events there are the absolute best.  Entrance is free, the venue is relatively open and spacious, and their staff and security are particularly courteous.  If it isn’t obvious yet, I like attending events here.

PCC2014Day2__0010

The 7th Philippine Cosplay Convention was organized by Cosplay.ph in partnership with Hobbiworx Inc. and Robinson’s Place Manila.  Boasting of being the longest running free event for all cosplay enthusiasts, it was a well-attended event, with veterans, newbies and regular congoers particularly eager to be there and to be seen and to partake in the many attractions during the event, like exhibits, cosplay contests, performances, anime and cosplay auctions.

PCC2014Day2__0017

The Midtown Atrium of Robinson Place Manila in Ermita was bustling with activity as even ordinary mallgoers got to experience the event along with the regular patrons, particularly curious of the various merchandise booths selling toys, wigs, costumes, accessories and many more.

PCC2014Day2__0012

One of the featured events on the second day was the Filipino Cosplay Category where contestants cosplay characters from Filipino pop culture.  Of the handful of great cosplayers who participated, Justin Lavio as Grava Man of Kidlat won the top prize.

There was also the Dragon Nest Cosplay Contest sponsored by Cherry Credits.   Dragon Nest is a popular MMORPG and contestants had great cosplays based on the characters from the game.  The winner was Izaiah Luke Buelos as Black Dragon.

PCC2014Day2__0058

Then there was the Group Cosplay contest where teams of cosplayers gave great performances in front of the crowd.  The winner was the Arrow cosplay team.

PCC2014Day2__0051

The second day of the event was as enjoyable as the first, but with more cosplayers, some having attended the first day as well.  Cosplayers were mingling with the crowds and having their photos taken.  For me it was another chance to get as many of them as I can on my camera.

PCC2014Day2__0022

I cosplayed again that day as I took coverage photos of the event.  Again it was tough doing both but it makes me very happy being able to enjoy the benefits of being a photographer and cosplayer.  As night came I just took it easy and spent time catching up with old friends and getting to know new ones.  PCC 2014 was all I expected it to be and more and I definitely consider it as one of the better cosplay events this year.

The program was hosted by Brad and Fatima, mainstays of these events.  The first cosplay category was the historical cosplay where folks in mostly historical military costumes performed in front of the crowd.  The winner for that category was Emmanuel Ortega who cosplayed Spanish Governor-General Ortega and gave a monologue in pure Spanish.

PCC2014Day1_0219

The most awaited category of the whole convention was the Solo Cosplay Tag Competition.  The cosplay tag is a fun twist to the usual cosplay catwalk  wherein cosplayer come up with skits or fight scenes or whatever strikes their fancy to the other participants before and after them.

PCC2014Day1_0004

At the end of the day, winners included: Isabel Cortez for Best Craftmaship, Rowyn Sanggayan for Best Performance, Maria Angelica Magdaso for Best Child, Izaiah Luke Buelos for Best Robot or Mecha, Mark Anthony Vibas  for Best Male, and Erika Garbin for Best Female, winning two straight years in a row.  Winners received gift certificates from Robinsons and giveaways from event sponsors.

PCC2014Day1_0180

The first day of the event was quite exciting and enjoyable, with a couple hundred cosplayers mingling with the crowds and having their photos taken.  For me it was a chance to see old friends, meet new ones, and establish ties with other organizations which are part of the cosplay community.

PCC2014Day1_0159

I took over a thousand photos that day while in my ANBU cosplay.  It’s a bit tougher than usual, but I really enjoy being both photographer and cosplayer.  When it was almost time for closing, I just enjoyed costripping.  Sure my costume really wasn’t a hit for photographers, but my character, Nyanbu, was quite popular with the children, and making them smile was a welcome reward for the effort I put in throughout the day.  As it all that weren’t enough, I had to cover the second day as well, ahahahaha.  Please visit our post for the second day as well.

Ati-atihan Cosplay Coverage Revisited

IMG_1222_resize

Had a great time the first time I cosplayed and did a coverage of the Ati-atihan Festival in Kalibo, Aklan last year, with my brother Bryan taking photos.  The streets were colorful, noisy and alive, and I can just walk around in my ANBU cosplay without feeling out of place.  Had people take pictures with me, had fun dancing around to the maddeningly festive beat of the drums, and had a great time seeing people just being friendly with each other.

Imaginative bird-inspired costume on this cheerful girl.

For this special occasion, I customized one of my masks into a special black tribal ANBU Ati-atihan version.  As for the rest of my costume, it was the first time I used it so the fitting and the design … wasn’t quite there yet but it was enough to at least have some people recognize me as an ANBU.  Had fun as people took pictures of me and with me.  It was an exhilarating experience, one I doubt I’ll ever forget.

Sadly, even though I had vowed to come back this year, I wasn’t able to do so because of many things.  Hopefully I can go back next year so I can feel the excitement again.  Will need to go now, but I hope you’ll take some time to look at my brother’s photos.

Because it’s my Birthday

IMG_3140

The morning of my birthday I went to Quiapo Church.  I heard mass.  I had confession.  I told the priest that one of my many faults was that I have been ungrateful to the people I know.  For penance he told me to say 10 Hail Marys for each person I should be thankful for.  After two hours or so I lost count.   I thanked God for my wonderful, supportive family.  I thanked God for my loving, understanding girlfriend.  I thanked God for my old friends who have never left me.  I thanked God for the students who still remember me when I still taught them college English.  I thanked God for the kind cosplayers I have met this year.  I thanked God for the amazing photographers who took the time to be my mentors and my friends.  I thanked God for the generous people from all around the world who have supported my website.  My knees and thighs hurt from kneeling, but I realized I am lucky to have known so many wonderful people.  I realized that since I started blogging, photography and cosplaying, I’ve gained more friends than all my other years of existence combined.

IMG_3182

So yeah, am really happy on my birthday, and I have all of you to thank for it.  God willing I’ll continue what I started.  I don’t know for how long, but this coming year I’ll make sure I’ll make every day count.

Great photos taken by my brother Bryan.  Thank you for dropping by, and do visit us again soon.
