Dinny Grayson : Challenges

arkadymac.com highlights not only the best events in the Philippines but also its cosplayers. We are fortunate enough to get a small interview with her. Here is our feature on a great artist and our dear friend, Dinny Grayson.

Dinny Grayson comes from her nickname and the last name of her favourite comic book character, Richard “Dick” Grayson. It was meant to be because she wanted to be Mrs. Grayson – as in marry Dick Grayson but then her brother, Gelo Grayson, cosplayed him and that ruined her image of Dick Grayson. Now it is definitely just a family name and she no longer have a crush on Dick Grayson.

Free Comic Book Day 2013 Coverage

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m usually ambivalent and apathetic about holidays that don’t mean double pay at work, like Valentine’s Day, but this year’s first Saturday of May is a special exception as the whole world celebrates Free Comic Book Day. Unlike other holidays, this one means what it says and that is enough reason to be happy about. Yes! Free comic books at participating bookstores all around the world.  No ifs or buts.  It was started in the US in 2002 to promote comic book reading: to draw in new readers while calling back old ones and to thank all the people supporting the industry.  Since then, Free Comic Book Day has become a huge success and has spread to many countries.

In the Philippines, there were three different events where comics were given away last May 4.  The first one was at Fully Booked and Comic Odyssey at Bonifacio High Street, which gave away comics as well as sample editions from local artists.   Planet X in Glorietta also gave away free comics to the public.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The biggest event in terms of attractions and activities was held at the 4th floor of National Bookstore on Quezon Avenue, entitled Setting the Record, as invited artists aim to set the record for most number of sketches at a comic book event.  Luckily, this event was the closest so I was there around 8 in the morning with only about 40 people in line before me, some coming in as early as 6.  They started letting people in around 9.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Lots of things were in store for those who attended.  The biggest draw of all would of course was the free comic books, and each attendee got to take home three of them. THREE.  Three special edition comic books of popular titles published just for this very occasion.  Different titles are apparently made available at different locations.  I chose a rather flashy Superman, Last Son of Krypton comic, Aphrodite and Bleeding Cool.  There was no catch.  I didn’t need to buy anything to claim them.  I just got in line like the others and waited my turn to choose from among the twenty to thirty titles on display.  That unbelievably simple.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Besides the free comics, there are also many other booths that gave away freebies.  I got two pins/badges, stickers and a limited edition comic book created by local artists.  There were lots of comics on sale as well, most were on huge discounts including special covers and editions, signed copies, and back issues.  There were also comic book-themed merchandise, toys and collectibles on display or on sale.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Probably the most important aspect of the event was the presence of local comic book artists presenting their work to the public.  There are booths and sections dedicated to showing off locally-produced work, which can be viewed and purchased as well. I personally got to see and was amazed at the quantity and quality of work that our homegrown artists can do, as well as the creativity and hard work they have put in to their craft.  There was quite a number of these independent artists, creators, publishers  at the event, and their works were absolutely astounding.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There was a particular booth that caught my eye.  It was the Wacom booth, which had a really fancy pen tablet and interactive pen display, the kind of devices professional artists use.  They gave me a great demonstration and tried it briefly myself.  I can just imagine how easy my life would be with these babies helping me improve my site, but I guess I’d have to wait a while.  Wacom, by the way, is the world’s leading manufacturer of pen tablets, interactive pen displays and digital interface solutions.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It was quite unfortunate that I had to go to my regular job after just an hour at the event, so I was unable to stay to catch the part where famous artists working on US-based titles along with prominent local artists talk about the industry or about their work and do sketches and autographs.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Not much in the way of cosplay today, with only three individuals spotted in the event, but their efforts are well appreciated in this blog, of course.  I got to take snapshots of a father and son duo as a young Robin and the Red Hood, and there was Green Lantern as well.

It was a great day for me and all the others who participated. Got to go home with lots of freebies and was agreeably the most loot I’ve received at any event in quite a while.  Already looking forward to next year’s Free Comic Book Day, and I’ll make sure to bring more friends along.

Ozine Fest 2013

IMG_8311

The entire staff of arkadymac.com goes full force in bringing you highlights from all three days of Ozine Fest 2013 held at SM Megamall. Nyanbu, Stephanie and Obito-kun brave the front lines to bring you all the great action.

 Day 1

IMG_8823

Nyanbu has it tough as he has to cover all three days of Ozine Fest 2013 at SM Megamall over the weekend.  Luckily, our wonderful partner Eiri came in as Rise Kujikawa to help the beleaguered and overwhelmed Nyanbu out.  First day started with a bang with Battle of the Bands and Anime Karaoke, with great prizes going to the winners.  Of course there were booths and stalls, like a wishing shrine, matsuri exhibit, a maid cafe, a host club, tarot reading, and a whole lot more.  Lots of fun and excitement were in store for the visitors, with special guests gracing the event.

Nyanbu likes to go on and on but it’s three in the morning and has to work in a few hours so he can go to Day 2 later.  So here are some photos of the event.  Thanks for all your support and please enjoy the rest of our coverage. Please stay tuned.

Day 2

IMG_9185

No rest for the weary kitten as Nyanbu brings you our special coverage of Ozine Fest Day 2 at SM Megamall held over the weekend. Absolutely lots of people attending the event and an amazing multitude of cosplayers were there to be seen.  There were so many cosers that Nyanbu had a hard time keeping up. Ah, must be that age thing.  Or maybe it was because he was constantly chasing Sean Vergil, a rather hyperactive but very cute little Son Goku.

As Nyanbu will be off to work soon, we must apologize for giving you this humble installment of pictures but we promise to update the post real soon, okay? And please stay tuned for our Day 3 coverage, by far the best coverage we ever had.

Thank you for all your support.

Day 3, Part 1

OzineFestD3Pt1_004

Ozine Fest 2013 is undeniably the biggest cosplay event this summer, with thousands of visitors over the three day-affair, filling the SM Megamall Megatrade Halls to to capacity.  So to give you the best possible coverage of this amazing event, the entire senior officers and staff of arkadymac.com went to Ozine Fest in full force and ready to tackle the unforgiving crowds, and the hordes of screaming yaoi fangirls and crazed otaku.

OzineFestD3Pt1_003

And because giving our loyal friends, visitors, and readers the best coverage possible is our priority, we have enlisted the services of our newest cosplay correspondent, the lovely and genki Stephanie as Hatsune Miku.  It is with open arms (and a sigh of relief) that we welcome Stephanie into the group as she has distinguished herself well on the field of combat despite being only her first field assignment for the blog.  We’ll have a special feature about Stephanie herself real soon so please stay tuned for that as well.

OzineFestD3Pt1_005

Lots of attractions and events going on in and around the venue, so the staff had to work thrice as hard to bring you the highlights.  Xtian Mack was in charge of public relations,  Obito-kun providing attention and publicity for the site, and Stephanie being our cover girl for guests and cosplayers alike.  Special acknowledgement to our tensai photographer, Buraimaku, for his amazing snapshots of the event.

We hope you enjoy our special coverage of Ozine 2013, but we urge you to come back in the next few days as we’ll be posting more great photos.  Thank you all for your support.

Day 3, Part 2

OzineFestD3Pt2_005

With the recently concluded Ozine Fest 2013 undeniably being the biggest cosplay event this summer, we actually had to separate our Day 3 coverage into several parts.  With lots of attractions going on at any given time within the Megatrade halls of SM Megamall that Sunday, people were just in a frenzy taking part in the event.  Ozine Fest also attracted literally hundreds of cosplayers to the venue, which was why it was a tall order just to keep up with them and bringing you, our beloved readers, our special coverage of the event.

IMG_8288

We are thankful that the sweet and genki Stephanie has stepped up to the challenge and lent us a hand, being our field correspondent on Part 1, the previous post.

Now Kaloy, a.k.a. Obito-kun, takes charge in bringing you Part 2 of our Day 3 coverage.  He was quite a hit with the people himself as more than a hundred asked to take pictures of him and with him.  He was up to the challenge as we bring you more highlights in the continuation of our special Ozine 2013 coverage.  And of course, we would have been lost without our tensai photoman Buraimaku taking splendid snapshots of the event.  Special thanks to Mika for her unwavering support as well.  Please tune in within the next few days for more updates and more photos. Thank you for all your support.
