Cubicon 2013: Where All Communities Collide

cubicon_012

Our field correspondent and resident cosplayer Obito-kun covers Cubicon  2013 at SM Megamall Megatrade Hall 1 over the weekend as Nyanbu was off on a field assignment/errand/alibi.  Kudos to Obito-kun on a job well done, bringing us pics from the frontlines.  He tells of a great many cosplayers in attendance, with seasoned veterans and first-timers battling it out in the cosplay competition.  Cosplay group Cosplay Famiglia also unveiled their new X Black Rock Shooter Theme Project.  We’ll feature them at a future post soon.  Many thanks to all those who helped out: Mika-chan, Hazel, Willord and others we will have to name and thank later. For now, please enjoy some highlights of the event. Thank you all for the support.

(Please click on a photo to view slideshow)

Hundreds lined up on opening day, March 9, 2013, for the Cherry Convention, a festival celebrating the unique culture of games, cosplay, hobbies and other aspects of Pinoy pop culture.  Held at SM Megamall Megatrade Halls 1 and 2, this bonanza featured online game tournaments, exhibits, vendor stalls, game booths, a cosplay competition, and many more.

Everyone who came was treated to freebies and giveaways like posters, accessories, and online promos, among others.  The event also featured the birthday bash of Ms. Alodia Gosengfiao, the Philippine’s premier cosplay idol. She entertained the crowd with her irresistible charm, wit and style.  With her extensive experience and knowledge of the world of cosplaying, she was also an honored  judge for the cosplay competition.

Held over the weekend, this two-day event hosted competitions among the top gaming teams and individuals in the country, battling it out live throughout the duration of the convention.  Big prizes awaited all those who won their respective games and divisions.

All those who attended were given quite a treat and were clamoring for more as Cherry Convention drew to a close.  With its array of special guests, games and attractions, Cherry Convention was a certified success in celebrating pop culture in the Philippines.

Cosplay Mania 12 as the Philippines’ Biggest Cosplay Event of the Year Coverage part 2

Well, hopefully you’ve seen Part 1, because Part 2 just means more pics.  People have been contacting us and were clamoring, just dying to see more pics of the event.  Well, maybe not.  But hey, got you curious, right? Fine.  More pics then.

While this wonderful lady from the TV5 booth is beyond perfect, my cosplaying in this photo is just plain horrible.

More of Cosplayer Kaname

Maybe there will be more female visitors here if I add more Kaname pics.

More and more Kaname

Oh, the incessant screaming and shouting from crazed fangirls.

Derek Ramsay

Strangely enough, Derek Ramsay was there to promote an upcoming superhero show called Kidlat, or somesuch. Oh, the incessant screaming and shouting from crazed fangirls. Oh my poor eardrums.

Cosplay Mania 12 as the Philippines’ Biggest Cosplay Event of the Year Coverage

“Then it goes BOOM!” Nurse Joker said with a grin.

The biggest cosplay event in the Philippines this year, Cosplay Mania ’12, the fifth such event in the country, was held on two consecutive weekends, September 29 and 30, 2012 at the grand SMX Convention Center Function Rooms 3 to 5, SM Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.  It was such a jam-packed event with over 5,000 attendees with a long itinerary last from 11:00am to 9:00pm for both days.  As expected, it was a crazy even filled with all sorts of people: stunning celebrities, curious onlookers, crazed cosplayers, screaming fangirls, baffled tourists, and of course, there was me, Xtian Mack, in my cosplay debut, 35 years of age and dressed up as a ninja.  You know why?  Because it’s fun, that’s why.
The people organizing the event,  Cosplay.ph Organization, Inc. has lived up to its promise of hosting Cosplay Mania 12 as the biggest and most memorable gathering of cosplayers indeed as they have invited internationally-renowned professional cosplayers:  Jesuke, Kaname, and Reika–all of whom were stunning and gracious as guests and judges for the different events.  They were really nice and loved the warm reception of Filipino fans, particularly Kaname, who had screaming fangirls all over her and fantasizing many yaoi things with him.
As for the tickets, the full access pass was worth P250 while the hall entry pass was P150.  It might have cost a bit, since other cosplay events are usually free but for a whole day’s worth of zany fun and crazy sights and surprise celebrities, it was well worth the cost.
As an event that may as well be the last sign before the apocalypse, this is one event that this site certainly cannot forgo, which is why this site’s best writer, coincidentally it’s only writer, Xtian Mack, went to cover Cosplay Mania ’12.  Because of the perils of mass hysteria,  crazed yaoi fangirls, overcrowding and diarrhea, Xtian Mack set off to the venue armed only with a pack of kropek, leather armor, a kunai, a scroll of petrification, and a scroll of turn undead into friends.  May the gods have mercy on his soul.
Many thanks to the writer’s brother, Buraimaku, for the absolutely wonderful pics for absolutely free.  If that ain’t what makes him the best brother in the world, I don’t know what will.
Xtian Mack makes his cosplay debut at the grandest cosplay stage of them all: Cosplay Mania ’12.

It’s all just fun and games until Nurse Joker brings out a detonator.

One of my personal favorites, She Hulk cosplayed by a guy. He was pretty convincing.

Xtian Mack with the hottest Matrix Reggae Twins on the planet.

Someone called Deadpool was a pretty nice and funny guy…until I found that sword lodged in my back afterwards.

I think I’d make a great sidekick to the Dark Knight. He was pretty confused though.

I asked Edward to cut a loose thread on the sleeve of my costume and in a flash I lost an arm. “Ooops!” he said.

If you don’t know this guy, you should. He’s our only defense against foreign aggression and territorial disputes–Captain DFA!

When I told him my character was Japanese, he hit me with his shield and called me a communist.

You should have seen this guy when he heard over the PA that his bike was stolen.

All of them, especially the Riddler, was clueless as who I was supposed to be.
Pretty folks dragged me into the All Nippon Airways booth and gave me free stuff even though I looked like someone who’ll never be allowed on a plane. I love ANA!
My happiest moments as a cosplayer were times when little girls come up to me and tell me they like my cat ears and touch them and ask to take a picture with me, like this adorable darling.

You get to have your picture taken with pretty maids too.

Being side by side with this fearsome female cosplayer, I realized that in comparison that I’m just a cute, defenseless kitten.

You’d think it’s a huge plastic statue until it points its laser rifle at you.

I give up. I don’t even have a ninja star on me.

Xtian Mack gets it on with K-on to the tune of Fwa Fwa Time(Fwa Fwa Time)

Demon Hunter from Diablo 3. He says he’s here because the server’s down.

Since I’m supposed to be a Naruto character, let’s feature Naruto-inspired costumes. Here’s a really cute Temari and a really convincing Orochimaru.

It’s funny when crazy people get together: Left to right: Naruto, Azuma, Kakashi, generic ANBU and someone who appears to be Momochi Zabuza. I’m not really sure.

A cute Tenten.

Two Tobis and me.

Sexy No Jutsu Naruto and Akatsuki Kakuzu

Akatsuki Wolf. I’ve just been told there’s no such thing but he’s so darned cute he should be one.

One of my most favorite characters, Mr.2, Bon Clay. Probably the best Okama ever.

Kenshin and Sanosuke from Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin

Some flashy get-up you got there, babe.

Me and Hatsune Miku, virtual diva.

What’s better than a picture with Miku? A picture with two MIkus of course.

Or a robotic Miku. I guess that one’s hard to top.

We’ve got more pics of the event itself, particularly those of the contests and the special foreign guests, so please visit us again in a day or two.  Thank you for visiting.
