Cosplay Got Talent

Cosplay_Got_Talent_2014_0001

It was an event as colorful as it was entertaining as we got to cover Cosplay Got Talent at Walter Mart Sucat, where the public got to see much more from resident and visiting cosplayers.  Organized by Sir Ricky, also known as Jestler the Magician, with the help of his many eager friends, Cosplay Got Talent was a charity event that showcased the many interesting talents that cosplayers have been just waiting to share with the public.

Cosplay_Got_Talent_2014_0015

Conceptualized as a cozy, friendly event that people of all ages can enjoy, Sir Ricky, even though it started out humbly and with many challenges, had high hopes for the event.  His efforts were not wasted as cosplayers from all over Manila gathered at the event center of Walter Mart Sucat to showcase their talents as well as have fun with the crowd, taking photos with them and just having an enjoyable time.

Cosplay_Got_Talent_2014_0016

The event had many features like a teakwondo exhibition by a local group.  There were street magicians and an amazing acrobatic troupe.

There were exciting dance numbers by guest performers, Borealis, who have been making waves at cosplay events recently.

Cosplay_Got_Talent_2014_0002

The highlight of course was the Cosplay Got Talent competition where cosplayers, besides their talents in cosplaying itself, showed to the public their other talents, like singing, acting, dancing, performing magic tricks, and many others, all enjoyed by an appreciative crowd that had gathered there that afternoon.

Among having the honor of being the judges for this competition were our Cosplay Models Mina Kim and Nicolette Feeser, who were a hit to both the other cosplayers and to the audience as well.  As much as they had appreciated all of the contestants that afternoon, winners had to be chosen.  and in the end, Melanie got to win the Best Female category and Uchi as best Chibi.  Dancing his way to the top was our friend Miko Raezor “The Dancing Revenant”, who got to groove his body while in costume armor for many non-stop minutes, a feat not easily dismissed.  He won as champion and Best Male.  He and the other winners got to take home nice prizes from the organizers.

It wasn’t all about the contest, as everyone knew that it was all for fun and for charity, and cosplayers and their friends got to spend a great afternoon together.

Many thanks and congratulations to Sir Ricky and the rest of the organizers for having this successful event as we look forward to more, hopefully real soon.

Mikki Nyan: Summertime

mikki_nyan_miku_feature_0010

We happily welcome the summer with a hot feature on Mikki Nyan, our newest cosplay model for arkadymac.com in her first online feature.  She has always amazed us at events with her striking cosplays and convincing portrayals, which is why we are excited to have her grace the cover of this special edition.

mikki_nyan_miku_feature_0008

Photos by special guest photographer Chris Mortell of Click Concept, with Brymac of arkadymac.com, with Bless and Alice as Executive Producers.

mikki_nyan_miku_feature_0022

For this feature, Mikki chose to cosplay Hatsune Miku, swimsuit version.  “I like Miku because she can be anyone,” she tells us.  “She can be a nurse, as school girl, a lover, a friend, a sister. She’s not caged by what others think.  Vocaloids might not be alive, they might not have certain traits, but their songs really leave an impression on people.”

mikki_nyan_miku_feature_0017

Starting out in 2007, Mikki’s fascination with cosplay has never waned.   “Cosplaying is indeed fun,” she admits.  “I feel ecstatic when other people recognize my character, and sometimes, out of the blue, they spazz with me.”  With the wide breadth of characters she has portrayed over the years, we were curious about how she makes her selections.  “I choose the characters I cosplay based on how big their impact on me is, she says.”  “I might want to be or see myself in that character. Physical attributes are not that big of a deal.”

mikki_nyan_miku_feature_0004

One fond memory she has of cosplaying is when she joined Otaku House last year and miraculously got into the finals. She says that it was her first time joining and she didn’t expect to even get in.  Even though in the end she didn’t win, she was still very happy for the tremendous outpouring of support for her by everyone.

mikki_nyan_miku_feature_0009

Though she may make it look effortless, Mikki admits that cosplay is very challenging.  From choosing which fabric to use, to making her own props and accessories, to fixing her wig and deciding what kind of makeup to apply for each character, she says that cosplaying tests the limits of her ability and creativity.  She says she can’t even make her own costumes yet since she doesn’t own a sewing machine but she asks help from friends and from shops.

mikki_nyan_miku_feature_0023

Of Chris Mortell, the photographer who helped take her shots for this feature, she says that he’s fun to work with. He wants to make sure that his model looks good in his photos. “Thanks for everything up until now, she’d like to tell him.  “I know you’ll keep getting better.”

mikki_nyan_miku_feature_0015

Mikki would like to thank everyone who has kept on supporting her.  Special thanks go to Eissen Chan for lending her Miku wig, Bayo for my swimsuit, and Purpektion shop for her Miku lens.

To our readers, Mikki has this to say:  “To everyone, if you love what you’re doing, don’t let others ruin it for you. You might get bashed and criticized, but remember that cosplaying should be for fun. The most important person you have to impress is YOU.”

Mikki recently found out that she has inspired some people with her cosplays, and that that has made her very happy.  We hope that you can continue on supporting her so she can inspire more people with her talents, and that you can be sure that we’ll be happy to feature her here again at arkadymac.com.

Vocaloid Camellia Version Group Photoshoot

VocaloidCamelliaShoot_0037

I volunteered to be a photographer for this Vocaloid photoshoot at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center last weekend.  Vocaloids are really fascinating to me, so cosplays of them really get my attention.  This particular group wanted to do the Camellia version of the Vocaloid characters, and we were all pleasantly surprised about the turnout for this one.

VocaloidCamelliaShoot_0022

The models for this shoot found each other at an FB page, Wanted: Cosplayers.  Even though not really having met before the shoot, they got to be online friends, discussing their love for Vocaloids and planning this shoot for weeks on end.  Even though there were some who unfortunately couldn’t be there, the shoot nonetheless went on as planned.

VocaloidCamelliaShoot_0013

Along with a small group of photographers, they went around the park in search for great locations to shoot in.  There was lots of time in between shots to have fun and get to know each other better despite the heat.

VocaloidCamelliaShoot_0017

It was just a small get-together of folks who had the same interests and their efforts at organizing this shoot were modestly rewarded with a pleasant afternoon of new photos and new friends and new stories to tell others about.  Hopefully next time we can get other cosplayer tom join in on this little project.

VocaloidCamelliaShoot_0031

Many thanks to everyone who participated in this shoot and shared their time with everyone.

Prei: A Song and a Wish

Prei_SantaMiku_0021

Since it’s the holidays already, we want to bring some great Christmas cheer of the cosplay variety.  We then invited our newest cosplay model, Prei, to grace this week’s  special edition of arkadymac.com.  She may not cosplay as often as she would want to, but when she does, she’s sure to leave an impression.  Photography and Post-processing by Brymac, Blessma as Executive Producer and Xtian Mack as Director/Writer.

Prei_SantaMiku_0023

Prei tells us she got into cosplaying because of her love for anime.  The first character she ever cosplayed was Haruhi Suzumiya, as she insists she got so attached to the series.    She recalls she started in high school though wishes she had started sooner.  She continues to cosplay because she considers it a reward for herself for working hard and doing her best at home and at school.

Prei_SantaMiku_0001

For this feature, Prei cosplays Santa Miku, a Christmas version of the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku from Crypton Future Media.  Like the usual portrayal of Miku, Prei describes herself to be a genki girl:  quite cheerful and friendly.  This wasn’t always the case though, as she used to be a timid and shy person.

Prei_SantaMiku_0007

She says cosplaying has allowed her to become a more outgoing and a more sociable individual who can go out in public and enjoy herself.  She says that  thanks to cosplaying she has more friends now with whom she shares the many things she likes in common like anime, games, and making costumes and props.

Prei_SantaMiku_0011

Prei tells us she is at her happiest when the people around her appreciate her cosplays.  She does admit that cosplaying can be quite challenging since it can be hard to think of the next character to cosplay or coming up with many different poses at events.  Even so, she says she’ll continue cosplaying as long as she still feels young and as long as the people around her supports her passion.

Prei_SantaMiku_0012

Prei would like to thank her parents, Yhanie, her friends, her Bulacan Cosplay Family, her BSN 1B-1 classmates and dorm mates.  to all our readers, she has this to share:  “Just be yourself, do what you want if you have passion for something and strive to achieve it!”

Prei_SantaMiku_0016e

We at arkadymac.com of course support her and invited you to see more of Prei in future features.  Thank you for dropping by and do visit us again for more coplay features here at arkadymac.com.

Invitational Otaku Urule Photoshoot 5 (IOP5)

IOP5_0200

It was a blast covering IOP 5, or the Invitational Otaku Urule Photoshoot 5, the latest installment in a series of photoshoots for cosplayers and photographers alike.  Organized by Otaku Urule, a student-based organization which promotes Japanese pop culture in the country, literally hundreds of cosplayers and photographers converged at the PUP Main Campus in Sta. Mesa, Manila, all eager to participate in this unique event where the theme was “school.”  As many anime have been about the ups and downs and bittersweet memories of school life, cosplayers took the opportunity to wear their blouses, pleated skirts, neckties, and even gangster attire in homage to the characters they have come to  love and admire.

IOP5_0053

Gracing the event with her amazing presence was seasoned model Cyen Lazam who also came in her own eye-catching cosplay, much to the delight of the participants.

Once again it was an opportunity for this unique community to affirm friendships and discover new ones in an atmosphere that encourages lively interaction between all participants.  The event officially started around noon, with the registration as well as announcements and reminders from the Otaku Urule staff.

IOP5_0004

Despite the hot, humid weather, everyone persevered and managed to have a great time  having pictorials all over the campus with all its interesting places and sights to see.  The event ended at sundown with final group pictures and words of gratitude from the organizers for the support and enthusiastic participation of all who came that day, and announced that there will be awards for best cosplay, best photographer, Cosplayer of the Month and other categories.

IOP5_0008

Our heartfelt thanks to Otaku Urule for yet another successful affair and we look forward to the next IOP set at the Chinese Gardens in Rizal Park next month.  Do visit their Facebook pages for more information.

Kidlat Konvention Coverage / Heroes Cosplay Part 1

Derek Ramsay as Kidlat makes his grand entrance.

Derek Ramsay as Kidlat makes his grand entrance.

It was a time for local superheroes to shine at the Kidlat Konvention held at the Activity Center of SM Annex, SM North EDSA over the weekend. TV5’s action/drama series, Kidlat, has become a successful show during its run, and as its first season draws to a close, its staff and stars have decided to bring the excitement to the public with this fabulously flashy spectacle.

KidlatKon_Part1_0014

Derek as Kidlat genuinely happy over the huge turnout and overwhelming show of support from the fans.

Derek Ramsay as the titular hero was warmly received by the crowd as he come on stage in full costume.  Shrieks and shouts and sighs from the audience never ceased as long as he was on stage. All the other cast from the show were also in attendance and performed for the crowd.  The event also featured TV5’s next series, Cassandra: Warrior Angel, and unveiled the cast and crew headed by Eula Caballero as Cassandra in full costume.

TV 5 also sponsored the Heroes Cosplay event in partnership with Cosplay.ph, with around 70 individuals allowed to participate in the event.   Of course, Nyanbu and Kaloy just had to compete and perform to the crowd as Contestant Number 8 and 9 respectively.  Nyanbu performed as Nyanbu, the cat-ninja, and Kaloy debuts his new Storm Shadow outfit.  For their troubles, they got a Boardwalk loot bag filled with so many fantastic things that they felt like they were champions and were seen smiling wildly until the next day, when they finally felt the body aches that always come with attending a cosplay event for an entire day.

Nyanbu and Kaloy pose like they won the championship. They were more than satisfied with the loot bags they got from competing.

KidlatKon_Part1_0062

Kaloy was more than glad to show off his new cos, classic Storm Shadow from G.I. Joe.

We applaud the organizers of the event for a job well done and we hope we get to see more of them in the future. As there were also many cosplayers who were there to compete or just to show their stuff to the crowd, we had a frantic time taking photos of them and with them.  Many thanks and adulation to Buraimaku for the really wonderful photos of the event.

Ozine Fest 2013

IMG_8311

The entire staff of arkadymac.com goes full force in bringing you highlights from all three days of Ozine Fest 2013 held at SM Megamall. Nyanbu, Stephanie and Obito-kun brave the front lines to bring you all the great action.

 Day 1

IMG_8823

Nyanbu has it tough as he has to cover all three days of Ozine Fest 2013 at SM Megamall over the weekend.  Luckily, our wonderful partner Eiri came in as Rise Kujikawa to help the beleaguered and overwhelmed Nyanbu out.  First day started with a bang with Battle of the Bands and Anime Karaoke, with great prizes going to the winners.  Of course there were booths and stalls, like a wishing shrine, matsuri exhibit, a maid cafe, a host club, tarot reading, and a whole lot more.  Lots of fun and excitement were in store for the visitors, with special guests gracing the event.

Nyanbu likes to go on and on but it’s three in the morning and has to work in a few hours so he can go to Day 2 later.  So here are some photos of the event.  Thanks for all your support and please enjoy the rest of our coverage. Please stay tuned.

Day 2

No rest for the weary kitten as Nyanbu brings you our special coverage of Ozine Fest Day 2 at SM Megamall held over the weekend. Absolutely lots of people attending the event and an amazing multitude of cosplayers were there to be seen.  There were so many cosers that Nyanbu had a hard time keeping up. Ah, must be that age thing.  Or maybe it was because he was constantly chasing Sean Vergil, a rather hyperactive but very cute little Son Goku.

As Nyanbu will be off to work soon, we must apologize for giving you this humble installment of pictures but we promise to update the post real soon, okay? And please stay tuned for our Day 3 coverage, by far the best coverage we ever had.

Thank you for all your support.

Day 3, Part 1

OzineFestD3Pt1_004

Ozine Fest 2013 is undeniably the biggest cosplay event this summer, with thousands of visitors over the three day-affair, filling the SM Megamall Megatrade Halls to to capacity.  So to give you the best possible coverage of this amazing event, the entire senior officers and staff of arkadymac.com went to Ozine Fest in full force and ready to tackle the unforgiving crowds, and the hordes of screaming yaoi fangirls and crazed otaku.

And because giving our loyal friends, visitors, and readers the best coverage possible is our priority, we have enlisted the services of our newest cosplay correspondent, the lovely and genki Stephanie as Hatsune Miku.  It is with open arms (and a sigh of relief) that we welcome Stephanie into the group as she has distinguished herself well on the field of combat despite being only her first field assignment for the blog.  We’ll have a special feature about Stephanie herself real soon so please stay tuned for that as well.

Lots of attractions and events going on in and around the venue, so the staff had to work thrice as hard to bring you the highlights.  Xtian Mack was in charge of public relations,  Obito-kun providing attention and publicity for the site, and Stephanie being our cover girl for guests and cosplayers alike.  Special acknowledgement to our tensai photographer, Buraimaku, for his amazing snapshots of the event.

We hope you enjoy our special coverage of Ozine 2013, but we urge you to come back in the next few days as we’ll be posting more great photos.  Thank you all for your support.

Day 3, Part 2

OzineFestD3Pt2_005

With the recently concluded Ozine Fest 2013 undeniably being the biggest cosplay event this summer, we actually had to separate our Day 3 coverage into several parts.  With lots of attractions going on at any given time within the Megatrade halls of SM Megamall that Sunday, people were just in a frenzy taking part in the event.  Ozine Fest also attracted literally hundreds of cosplayers to the venue, which was why it was a tall order just to keep up with them and bringing you, our beloved readers, our special coverage of the event.

We are thankful that the sweet and genki Stephanie has stepped up to the challenge and lent us a hand, being our field correspondent on Part 1, the previous post.

Now Kaloy, a.k.a. Obito-kun, takes charge in bringing you Part 2 of our Day 3 coverage.  He was quite a hit with the people himself as more than a hundred asked to take pictures of him and with him.  He was up to the challenge as we bring you more highlights in the continuation of our special Ozine 2013 coverage.  And of course, we would have been lost without our tensai photoman Buraimaku taking splendid snapshots of the event.  Special thanks to Mika for her unwavering support as well.  Please tune in within the next few days for more updates and more photos. Thank you for all your support.

With this post we conclude our special coverage of Ozine Fest 2013, undeniably the biggest cosplay event this summer.  It was also the most successful event of the season, with thousands coming in to visit and cosplay through its three-day duration.   It was long and exhausting and crowded, but the event sure was a lot of fun.  Although we perform our job for this blog very seriously for the sake of our extremely loyal readers, we must admit that this is a job we enjoy doing as we get to meet different kinds of people, get to make new friends, get to take pictures with visitors and make them happy, and more importantly, get to better appreciate this unusual but nevertheless amazing activity we call cosplaying.
