Happy birthday, Mao-chan!

Myao_feature_2_0007

We at the website would like to celebrate the birthday of our very own Mao-chan, a valuable member of our family.  She has been with us for over a year as our sessionist photographer and editor, and has been featured as one of our cosplay models as well.

Myao_feature_2_0019

We met her at Ozine Fest last year as a genderbend Kakashi cosplayer.  We liked her cosplay so much we invited her for a photoshoot as a cosplay model.  Before that happened, however, she has already become a wonderful addition to the arkadymac.com family as she helped us out with covering events, taking photos of cosplayers for us, as well as promoting the website.

IMG_3973

She accompanied us in our coverage of Invitational Otaku Urule Photoshoot 7 (IOP7) at the scenic Japanese Gardens at the historic Rizal Park.  She showed us her Kakashi genderbend school girl version, which was quite a hit at the event.  We just had fun with her despite the rain along with the other cosplayers who have gathered for the event.

We next had her at the very competitive TORCH 4: Tournament of Champions 4 at SM North EDSA, where she joined in the fun of the event, joining the cosplay parade around the mall and afterwards helping us out with the coverage, taking photos of the cosplayers there.  She also enjoyed having her photos taken with the many spectators there.

Myao_feature_2_0011

Then came Cosplay Mania 13, the biggest cosplay event of the year.  She joined the arkadymac.com family in its 2nd year anniversary, and we were of course all happy that we all got to meet through our love of cosplay.

After months in the making, on October 23, she finally had her photoshoot for her feature on arkadymac.com as its newest cosplay model.  She said it was a great opportunity for her and that it was a wonderful experience as she posed for the cameras as Kashi-chan, her Kakashi genderbend maid version.  Her feature on the website came soon afterwards as she joined a fantastic line of cosplay models who have graced the cover of arkadymac.com.

Myao_feature_2_0014

Due to personal circumstances, she had to relocate to California.  Although she is now far away from us, she remains a part of arkadymac.com as our editor, and, really soon, as an international correspondent, reporting cosplay events from across the Pacific.

Myao_feature_2_0017

We of course wish her well and await the day we can see her again and cosplay with each other once again.  We miss her dearly as we celebrate and greet her on her birthday.  So Mao-chan, please take care.  Happy birthday.  We miss you a lot.

Mao-chan: Behind the Mask

Myao_feature_0020

arkadymac.com covers all sorts of cosplay conventions and events, and we met Mao-chan at one as a Kakashi gender bend, attracting a lot of attention.  We had a few snaps of her and in hindsight, we should have taken more.  We invited her for a photoshoot for a feature, but fate has a funny way of surprising us and Mao-chan became a member of the arkadymac.com family as a sessionist photographer and editor.  We finally got to have that photoshoot, and somehow everything  went full circle.  Featuring our own Cosplay Model Mao-chan at arkadymac.com.

Myao_feature_0021

For today’s feature, Mao-chan chose her Kakashi gender bend Maid version.  She says she’s fond of masked characters like Kakashi of Naruto.  She also likes cosplaying male characters and school girls. She’s proud of the fact that she comes up with her own costumes.

Myao_feature_0022

Mao-chan tells us she got into cosplay because it is a way for her to express herself.  It is also through cosplay that she got to meet people with the same passion as her. She admits that she found herself having real fun and was enjoying herself, and that cosplaying helped boost her self-confidence.

Myao_feature_0001

Even though Mao-chan has been cosplaying for several years already, she admits that cosplay is still very challenging for her because she often creates costumes out of casual clothing.  She also thinks of ways to put a twist to each of them. She does say that every effort is very worth it when she sees the final outcome and people become fond of it appreciate her cosplays.

Myao_feature_0003

Mao-chan doesn’t get to attend as many cosplay events as much as she would want to, but when she does go, she makes sure she has a blast.  She gets excited when people ask to take pictures of her. She likes to gender bend male characters like Kakashi , so when a cosplayer of the same character (the original or costripped ones) asks for a picture or for fan service or just simply asks to be their friend, she feels very grateful and intensely excited.

Myao_feature_0016

Mao-chan has had a blast cosplaying, and she would like to thank her Onii-chan for always supporting her, making her experience the fun of cosplaying and accepting her as a family member of arkadymac.com. She would also like to thank Akai-kun for accompanying her to events, supporting her and sharing energy whenever she feels tired from long cosplay conventions.  She’s also grateful to her beloved father who has always been proud of his cosplayer daughter.

Myao_feature_0009

When asked how long she intends to cosplay, she says she wants to continue cosplaying for as long as she can and for as long as she would be able to find time for it.  To all our readers, she’d like to share her thoughts.  “Cosplaying would be very challenging at first but when you put your heart into it, you will be able to succeed. If you encounter a problem, always remember that there will always be ways for you to fix it. Lastly, trust yourself, don’t mind the opinion of other people when you cosplay. Just have fun and enjoy!”

Myao_feature_0011

We at arkadymac.com have always been glad that we’ve got to meet amazing people like Mao-chan through cosplaying.  She’s proof that cosplay can bring people together, and it can be the start of even more wonderful friendships.

Cosplayers Bring Smiles to the National Children’s Hospital

IMG_1680

Nyanbu was happy to be able to join a handful of cosplayers in helping out at the National Children’s Hospital in Quezon City.  Naruto Cosplayers of the Philippines headed by Sir Dave has had this program of making these visits for a long time already, so Nyanbu was more than grateful to tag along and document this event.  The idea was to bring cosplayers into the hospital in the hopes of making the children smile and be with characters as if they came straight out from TV, movies and comics.

IMG_1615

After dressing up and preparing, the cosplayers made their way to the children’s ward where a short program was started by Sir Dave as Master Pogi featuring the cosplayers that had assembled there.  The children and their parents who got to watch the show had an enjoyable time, thanks in part to Sir Dave’s creative storytelling and hilarious wit and sense of humor.

IMG_1770

After the program, the cosplayers went to visit the patients in their rooms and beds and talked and played with them for a while.  Stories were exchanged, patients and cosplayers curious to learn more about each other.  Photos were taken with each other to remember each other by.

IMG_1654

Toys that were brought along by the cosplayers were handed out to the children, as well as some snacks and treats that were shared as everyone continued to enjoy each other’s company.

IMG_1650

IMG_1643

We were moved by the silent resilience and courage that the children there had in the face of their pain and suffering, so it was humbling to know that, in our little way, cosplayers can help out in their own special way by making these children smile, even if just for a short while.

IMG_1713

We would like to thatk Sir Dave and NCPH for this wonderful opportunity, as well as to the staff of the National Children’s Hospital for allowing us to be of help. We would like to thank the children and their parents for allowing us to share some time with them.

IMG_1702

For everyone that had been involved, this will be a pleasant memory that will stay with them for a long time.

Kidlat Konvention Coverage / Heroes Cosplay Part 1

Derek Ramsay as Kidlat makes his grand entrance.

Derek Ramsay as Kidlat makes his grand entrance.

It was a time for local superheroes to shine at the Kidlat Konvention held at the Activity Center of SM Annex, SM North EDSA over the weekend. TV5’s action/drama series, Kidlat, has become a successful show during its run, and as its first season draws to a close, its staff and stars have decided to bring the excitement to the public with this fabulously flashy spectacle.

Derek as Kidlat genuinely happy over the huge turnout and overwhelming show of support from the fans.

Derek Ramsay as the titular hero was warmly received by the crowd as he come on stage in full costume.  Shrieks and shouts and sighs from the audience never ceased as long as he was on stage. All the other cast from the show were also in attendance and performed for the crowd.  The event also featured TV5’s next series, Cassandra: Warrior Angel, and unveiled the cast and crew headed by Eula Caballero as Cassandra in full costume.

TV 5 also sponsored the Heroes Cosplay event in partnership with Cosplay.ph, with around 70 individuals allowed to participate in the event.   Of course, Nyanbu and Kaloy just had to compete and perform to the crowd as Contestant Number 8 and 9 respectively.  Nyanbu performed as Nyanbu, the cat-ninja, and Kaloy debuts his new Storm Shadow outfit.  For their troubles, they got a Boardwalk loot bag filled with so many fantastic things that they felt like they were champions and were seen smiling wildly until the next day, when they finally felt the body aches that always come with attending a cosplay event for an entire day.

Nyanbu and Kaloy pose like they won the championship. They were more than satisfied with the loot bags they got from competing.

KidlatKon_Part1_0062

Kaloy was more than glad to show off his new cos, classic Storm Shadow from G.I. Joe.

We applaud the organizers of the event for a job well done and we hope we get to see more of them in the future. As there were also many cosplayers who were there to compete or just to show their stuff to the crowd, we had a frantic time taking photos of them and with them.  Many thanks and adulation to Buraimaku for the really wonderful photos of the event.

Ozine Fest 2013

IMG_8311

The entire staff of arkadymac.com goes full force in bringing you highlights from all three days of Ozine Fest 2013 held at SM Megamall. Nyanbu, Stephanie and Obito-kun brave the front lines to bring you all the great action.

 Day 1

IMG_8823

Nyanbu has it tough as he has to cover all three days of Ozine Fest 2013 at SM Megamall over the weekend.  Luckily, our wonderful partner Eiri came in as Rise Kujikawa to help the beleaguered and overwhelmed Nyanbu out.  First day started with a bang with Battle of the Bands and Anime Karaoke, with great prizes going to the winners.  Of course there were booths and stalls, like a wishing shrine, matsuri exhibit, a maid cafe, a host club, tarot reading, and a whole lot more.  Lots of fun and excitement were in store for the visitors, with special guests gracing the event.

Nyanbu likes to go on and on but it’s three in the morning and has to work in a few hours so he can go to Day 2 later.  So here are some photos of the event.  Thanks for all your support and please enjoy the rest of our coverage. Please stay tuned.

Day 2

IMG_9185

No rest for the weary kitten as Nyanbu brings you our special coverage of Ozine Fest Day 2 at SM Megamall held over the weekend. Absolutely lots of people attending the event and an amazing multitude of cosplayers were there to be seen.  There were so many cosers that Nyanbu had a hard time keeping up. Ah, must be that age thing.  Or maybe it was because he was constantly chasing Sean Vergil, a rather hyperactive but very cute little Son Goku.

As Nyanbu will be off to work soon, we must apologize for giving you this humble installment of pictures but we promise to update the post real soon, okay? And please stay tuned for our Day 3 coverage, by far the best coverage we ever had.

Thank you for all your support.

Day 3, Part 1

OzineFestD3Pt1_004

Ozine Fest 2013 is undeniably the biggest cosplay event this summer, with thousands of visitors over the three day-affair, filling the SM Megamall Megatrade Halls to to capacity.  So to give you the best possible coverage of this amazing event, the entire senior officers and staff of arkadymac.com went to Ozine Fest in full force and ready to tackle the unforgiving crowds, and the hordes of screaming yaoi fangirls and crazed otaku.

OzineFestD3Pt1_003

And because giving our loyal friends, visitors, and readers the best coverage possible is our priority, we have enlisted the services of our newest cosplay correspondent, the lovely and genki Stephanie as Hatsune Miku.  It is with open arms (and a sigh of relief) that we welcome Stephanie into the group as she has distinguished herself well on the field of combat despite being only her first field assignment for the blog.  We’ll have a special feature about Stephanie herself real soon so please stay tuned for that as well.

OzineFestD3Pt1_005

Lots of attractions and events going on in and around the venue, so the staff had to work thrice as hard to bring you the highlights.  Xtian Mack was in charge of public relations,  Obito-kun providing attention and publicity for the site, and Stephanie being our cover girl for guests and cosplayers alike.  Special acknowledgement to our tensai photographer, Buraimaku, for his amazing snapshots of the event.

We hope you enjoy our special coverage of Ozine 2013, but we urge you to come back in the next few days as we’ll be posting more great photos.  Thank you all for your support.

Day 3, Part 2

OzineFestD3Pt2_005

With the recently concluded Ozine Fest 2013 undeniably being the biggest cosplay event this summer, we actually had to separate our Day 3 coverage into several parts.  With lots of attractions going on at any given time within the Megatrade halls of SM Megamall that Sunday, people were just in a frenzy taking part in the event.  Ozine Fest also attracted literally hundreds of cosplayers to the venue, which was why it was a tall order just to keep up with them and bringing you, our beloved readers, our special coverage of the event.

IMG_8288

We are thankful that the sweet and genki Stephanie has stepped up to the challenge and lent us a hand, being our field correspondent on Part 1, the previous post.

Now Kaloy, a.k.a. Obito-kun, takes charge in bringing you Part 2 of our Day 3 coverage.  He was quite a hit with the people himself as more than a hundred asked to take pictures of him and with him.  He was up to the challenge as we bring you more highlights in the continuation of our special Ozine 2013 coverage.  And of course, we would have been lost without our tensai photoman Buraimaku taking splendid snapshots of the event.  Special thanks to Mika for her unwavering support as well.  Please tune in within the next few days for more updates and more photos. Thank you for all your support.

Day 3, Part 3

IMG_8533e

No, please. There isn’t much to begin with.  Nyanbu having too much fun with these zombies at Ozine Fest 2013 Day 3.

With this post we conclude our special coverage of Ozine Fest 2013, undeniably the biggest cosplay event this summer.  It was also the most successful event of the season, with thousands coming in to visit and cosplay through its three-day duration.   It was long and exhausting and crowded, but the event sure was a lot of fun.  Although we perform our job for this blog very seriously for the sake of our extremely loyal readers, we must admit that this is a job we enjoy doing as we get to meet different kinds of people, get to make new friends, get to take pictures with visitors and make them happy, and more importantly, get to better appreciate this unusual but nevertheless amazing activity we call cosplaying.

Ozine Fest 2013, Day 3 Part 3

IMG_8533e

Cubicon 2013: Where All Communities Collide

cubicon_012

Our field correspondent and resident cosplayer Obito-kun covers Cubicon  2013 at SM Megamall Megatrade Hall 1 over the weekend as Nyanbu was off on a field assignment/errand/alibi.  Kudos to Obito-kun on a job well done, bringing us pics from the frontlines.  He tells of a great many cosplayers in attendance, with seasoned veterans and first-timers battling it out in the cosplay competition.  Cosplay group Cosplay Famiglia also unveiled their new X Black Rock Shooter Theme Project.  We’ll feature them at a future post soon.  Many thanks to all those who helped out: Mika-chan, Hazel, Willord and others we will have to name and thank later. For now, please enjoy some highlights of the event. Thank you all for the support.

(Please click on a photo to view slideshow)

Hundreds lined up on opening day, March 9, 2013, for the Cherry Convention, a festival celebrating the unique culture of games, cosplay, hobbies and other aspects of Pinoy pop culture.  Held at SM Megamall Megatrade Halls 1 and 2, this bonanza featured online game tournaments, exhibits, vendor stalls, game booths, a cosplay competition, and many more.

Everyone who came was treated to freebies and giveaways like posters, accessories, and online promos, among others.  The event also featured the birthday bash of Ms. Alodia Gosengfiao, the Philippine’s premier cosplay idol. She entertained the crowd with her irresistible charm, wit and style.  With her extensive experience and knowledge of the world of cosplaying, she was also an honored  judge for the cosplay competition.

Held over the weekend, this two-day event hosted competitions among the top gaming teams and individuals in the country, battling it out live throughout the duration of the convention.  Big prizes awaited all those who won their respective games and divisions.

All those who attended were given quite a treat and were clamoring for more as Cherry Convention drew to a close.  With its array of special guests, games and attractions, Cherry Convention was a certified success in celebrating pop culture in the Philippines.
