Ati-atihan Cosplay Coverage Revisited

IMG_1222_resize

Had a great time the first time I cosplayed and did a coverage of the Ati-atihan Festival in Kalibo, Aklan last year, with my brother Bryan taking photos.  The streets were colorful, noisy and alive, and I can just walk around in my ANBU cosplay without feeling out of place.  Had people take pictures with me, had fun dancing around to the maddeningly festive beat of the drums, and had a great time seeing people just being friendly with each other.

Imaginative bird-inspired costume on this cheerful girl.

For this special occasion, I customized one of my masks into a special black tribal ANBU Ati-atihan version.  As for the rest of my costume, it was the first time I used it so the fitting and the design … wasn’t quite there yet but it was enough to at least have some people recognize me as an ANBU.  Had fun as people took pictures of me and with me.  It was an exhilarating experience, one I doubt I’ll ever forget.

Sadly, even though I had vowed to come back this year, I wasn’t able to do so because of many things.  Hopefully I can go back next year so I can feel the excitement again.  Will need to go now, but I hope you’ll take some time to look at my brother’s photos.

Kidlat Konvention Coverage / Heroes Cosplay Part 1

Derek Ramsay as Kidlat makes his grand entrance.

Derek Ramsay as Kidlat makes his grand entrance.

It was a time for local superheroes to shine at the Kidlat Konvention held at the Activity Center of SM Annex, SM North EDSA over the weekend. TV5’s action/drama series, Kidlat, has become a successful show during its run, and as its first season draws to a close, its staff and stars have decided to bring the excitement to the public with this fabulously flashy spectacle.

Derek as Kidlat genuinely happy over the huge turnout and overwhelming show of support from the fans.

Derek Ramsay as the titular hero was warmly received by the crowd as he come on stage in full costume.  Shrieks and shouts and sighs from the audience never ceased as long as he was on stage. All the other cast from the show were also in attendance and performed for the crowd.  The event also featured TV5’s next series, Cassandra: Warrior Angel, and unveiled the cast and crew headed by Eula Caballero as Cassandra in full costume.

TV 5 also sponsored the Heroes Cosplay event in partnership with Cosplay.ph, with around 70 individuals allowed to participate in the event.   Of course, Nyanbu and Kaloy just had to compete and perform to the crowd as Contestant Number 8 and 9 respectively.  Nyanbu performed as Nyanbu, the cat-ninja, and Kaloy debuts his new Storm Shadow outfit.  For their troubles, they got a Boardwalk loot bag filled with so many fantastic things that they felt like they were champions and were seen smiling wildly until the next day, when they finally felt the body aches that always come with attending a cosplay event for an entire day.

KidlatKon_Part1_0062

Kaloy was more than glad to show off his new cos, classic Storm Shadow from G.I. Joe.

We applaud the organizers of the event for a job well done and we hope we get to see more of them in the future. As there were also many cosplayers who were there to compete or just to show their stuff to the crowd, we had a frantic time taking photos of them and with them.  Many thanks and adulation to Buraimaku for the really wonderful photos of the event.

Invitational Otaku URule Photoshoot 4 (IOP4)

IOP4_030

The group Cosplay Famiglia with their take of the Black Rock Shooter game characters.

Outdoor photoshoots are great opportunities to get really great shots with lots of action amid great scenery.  However, one must contend with nature’s less convenient side. like the heat, sudden rain, humidity, mud, and lots of bugs.   Of course, the reliable senior field correspondents of arkadymac.com, Nyanbu and Obito-kun, will never mind going head-on against such perils and just laugh in the face of discomfort as they bring you our special coverage of the Invitational Otaku URule Photoshoot 4, or IOP4.  It is a photo marathon where cosplayers are paired with photographers and have photoshoots inside the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife in Quezon City.

IOP4_021

Obito-kun and Nyanbu report for duty despite almost going mad from the summer heat.

The theme for this particular event was “groups,” so cosplayers whose characters are from the same anime, manga, game, comic, or cartoon had a chance to show their stuff and had fun with their fellows.   Despite the intense heat and humidity and even a strong, sudden rain shower in the afternoon, those who participated in the even had a blast as another successful cosplay event came to an end.

Here are some of the photos we took at the event.  Thank you for dropping by and please do visit us again soon.

Happy Easter Bunnies

IMG_7306

Probably the most frequently asked question during Easter is: Do Easter bunnies lay Easter eggs?  The answer to that question is yes, of course, although they are a bit small and black and don’t taste too good.  That’s probably why they need to paint them in bright, enticing colors.

IMG_7297

Well, Easter is probably the only time I get to feature my wonderful bunnies, Dice and Domino.  The names can be misleading as they are both does, or females, sisters in fact. They are both doing quite well and are healthy at 2 years old.  Their parents were quite prolific and that taught me a lesson to be very careful in letting rabbits breed. They can start reproducing from three to four months of age,  produce four to seven litters/batches of babies per year.  A grown female can be pregnant continuously for up to eight months. One single pair of mature rabbits is able to produce 30-40 offspring per year.  Well, you get the idea.

IMG_7276

Dice is the mostly white one with black and gray spots.  Her coat pattern is called magpie, and she has really thick, fluffy fur. We were told that her father was of a French lop breed.   She has gray spots over both eyes, so we usually just call her “Eyeliner.” Dice is most adorable when she begs for food, even though she was fed just a minute ago. She can get quite temperamental and I describe her as a tsundere, a girl who pretends not to like you but actually secretly enjoys your affection. Or could just be my imagination.

IMG_7258

Domino has a shiny brown coat with black streaks and a light brown underside.  She is a classic example of the European rabbit, and in pet stores she is labelled as Ordinary Rabbit.  How dare they call Domino ordinary when she’s such an adorable creature!  Most people don’t really like Domino’s color compared to Dice’s, but I still love her the most.  Unfortunately, her right leg got injured from an accident when she was younger.  I learned through research that their bones are not as sturdy as we would think of jumping, active creatures.  She manages fine and is normal notwithstanding.  Domino is the more endearing of the two as she shows affection more readily than her sister.

IMG_7287

They both love having their cheeks scratched as that part is sensitive from all the whiskers and fur in that area. They also like it when you stroke or brush their fur.  Domino likes being brushed in only one direction while Dice loves being brushed forwards and backwards.

IMG_7281

What do these adorable creatures feed on?  Though Bugs Bunny seemingly eats nothing else but carrots, the bunnies usually eat any kind of plant matter: grass, leaves, vegetables, fruit, and the like.  They usually have pellets bought from a pet store for their regular meals and are supplemented by any vegetable we have on hand, like kangkong, talbos ng kamote, cabbage and pechay.  For treats, they strangely love banana peels and papaya peels.  Come to think of it, they are still plant-based.  They like peels more than the fruits themselves. Apparently, they like crunchy things more.

IMG_7338

It’s not really hard to take care of the bunnies; all they need is some quiet place to run around in and rest, feed them twice or thrice a day and provide clean water whenever you can. You’ll need to clean their area once or twice a day.  Their poop are just small pellets that are easily swept and are not soft or yucky or smelly like those of other creatures.  Their pee smells like that of any other creature, but that’s about the worst part of their care.  They are VERY quiet creatures who almost never make sounds.   They NEVER need to take a bath because they clean themselves quite well, ever better than cats. I should know since I also have a cat, and quite frankly, our cat Elizabeth is ALWAYS the dirtier pet.

IMG_7316

Why aren’t bunnies more popular as pets then?  Probably because they’re not as responsive to affection as cats or dogs.   The difference lies in the fact that rabbits are prey animals: food for other animals.  They are always afraid of other creatures because nature made them to be cautious and alert and distrustful; otherwise they’ll be dead and eaten more often. I’ve been taking care of bunnies for almost three years and I have yet to catch them sleeping at any time of the day because they ALWAYS hear you coming.  This is why they will always be cautious of you, and usually do not like to be touched, and especially carried, unlike cats or dogs.

IMG_7255

That doesn’t mean bunnies are totally devoid of love for you.  It takes time for them to learn to trust you, and when they do, I assure you, the feeling is ten times better than the trust afforded by a dog or cat.  The most rewarding thing you can get from a rabbit is the sight of their wagging tails when they’re really happy.  Their tails wag? Why yes.  Those small, cute tails wag from side to side when they’re happy. It’s really quite a rare sight, and probably the most rewarding sight of all.

IMG_7277

Wow.  Looks like I wrote a lot.  I hope it wasn’t obvious I love my bunnies too much, but hopefully you got to know more about the mysterious lives of bunnies. Happy Easter everyone, and do visit us again.

bulwild2096

(Please click on a photo to view slideshow)

Cosplayers and photographers alike showed up in droves at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife to take part in the Invitational Photoshoot in Cooperation with Otaku U Rule, the second such event for the year.  Once again it was an opportunity for this unique community to affirm friendships and discover new ones in an atmosphere that encourages lively interaction between all participants.  The event officially started around 10am with groups going around the park in search of great photo opportunities. This went on throughout the day with participants intermingling and swapping amongst themselves, all eager to get the best shots possible and having fun with they were at it.

bulwild2127

Otaku Urule, the organization behind this event, was again very pleased with the great turnout.  They also announced that there will be awards for best cosplay, best photographers, Cosplayer of the Month and other categories.

bulwild2084

Despite the heat and the fatigue, everyone who participated had a great time having their photoshoots in the different locations within the park.  At around 5pm or so, the event ended with group pictures and words of gratitude from the organizers for the support and enthusiastic participation of all who came that day.

bulwild2108

As the sun finally set over the park, everyone said their goodbyes and parted ways with fond memories and expectations of great photos of the day that was.  Congratulations to Otaku Urule for a another successful event and everyone expects more such events in the future.

Gong Xi Fa Cai in Mandarin and Gong Hey Fat Choy in Cantonese!  Xtian Mack’s Cosplay and Anime Cafe welcomes the Year of the Water Snake with a big bang with our special coverage of Chinoy Hao Bang 2013 at SM by the Bay at the SM Mall of Asia. Touted as the biggest Chinese New Year Celebration in Manila, Chinoy TV and Filipino-Chinese businesses, schools and organizations brought the best of Chinese culture in a spectacular display for everyone in attendance to see and experience.

ChiHaoBang080

The exhibition grounds were filled with booths from participating clubs, organizations and businesses wanting to wish everyone luck and prosperity, bringing  games, prizes and giveaways to all those present.  Early in the day there was a Chinese lantern-making contest with participants and their creations reflecting the Year of the Snake in their designs. The program proper started with a cultural show that saw amazing performances from talented Filipino-Chinese students in beautiful, colorful costumes.  They wowed the crowd in singing, dancing and acrobatics.

ChiHaoBang079

There was also a cosplay competition for Chinese-themed characters. The cosplayers performed on stage to the delight of the crowd.  There was then a delightful dragon dance performance as it turned evening, providing a festive mood up to the end of the program. To cap it off, a wonderful fireworks display was set off and it was beautiful as it was by the bay, the lights reflecting and illuminating off the waters of historic Manila Bay.

ChiHaoBang003

All in all, it was an amazing event that set a great start for the Chinese New Year.

Cosplay Coverage

It was quite rare to have a cosplay event with a Chinese theme attached to it, yet there were brave souls with lots of imagination who rose to the challenge.
