Collecticon 2014

Collecticon_2014_0046

A celebration of the many interesting hobbies people just cant get enough of, Collecticon 2013 was a fun two-day event at the Megatrade Hall 3 of SM Megamall last September 27-28, 2014. The event had a lot of displays featuring toys, model kits, comics, collectibles as well as tons of booths selling related merchandise.  The avid collector or even just the curious passerby certainly would have been delighted to browse through the thousands of varied items sold and displayed by the many exhibitors who supported the event.

Our friend Ms. Faith was there to host the event and did a great job keeping the audience entertained.  There were auctions and games as part of the event, keeping the audience upon their toes and clamoring for more great bargains offered.  Our friends from the Borealis dance group were there to perform on stage with a riveting dance number.  There was also the K-Zone K-pop event that saw many performers and their fans filling the hall with dance and music.

We were there for the cosplayers of course and there were quite a number of them at the event.  We saw them having a great time amongst themselves and having fun having their photos taken by mallgoers and taking photos with them as well.  No harm taking selfies and groupies with them of course.

Worthy of mention was a Guardians of the Galaxy cosplay group which included our friend Lyron.  The crowd just couldn’t get enough of them.

TORCH_5_2014_SM_Manila_0001

The road to Cosplay Mania ’14 nears its conclusion at the very competitive TORCH 5: Tournament of Champions 5 leg at SM Manila.  Organized by Cosplay.ph, TORCH 5 was an exciting event filled with attractions and surprises, and cosplayers and onlookers alike had an enjoyable time at this free admission affair.   The TORCH series is a prelude to the main event which is Cosplay Mania ’14, the biggest cosplay event in the country.

TORCH_5_2014_SM_Manila_0003

There were lots of fun things lined up that September afternoon, starting off with the cosplay parade which saw the cosplayers going around the mall, inviting the mall goers to come see the event.  Then there were on-stage games like Facepalm the Music where contestants get to guess popular tunes.  In between were song numbers from special performers, which included our friends from cosplay dance group, Borealis.

The event featured two cosplay contests, first of which was the Cyberzone Cosplay Grand Prix Competition sponsored by SM Malls, with nice prizes up for grabs.  Competitors battled it out on stage with impressive costumes and performances.  In the end, Rolando Logronio as Guardian Transformation was named Grand Prize Winner.

After the Cyberzone Cosplay Grand Prix, it was time for TORCH.  The Cosplay Tournament of Champions (TORCH) is a cosplay costume and talent competition that aims to create an energetic and competitive arena for Cosplay on a truly national level by holding cosplay contests in target venues in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.  TORCH Cos Playoffs will be held in key SM Supermalls all over the country to determine the best cosplayers of each region. Winners from the Cos Playoffs get a chance to compete in the TORCH Finals that will take place on Sunday, October 5, 2014 in Cosplay Mania ’14.  Great teams battled it out on stage, but in the end, B’T X-themed Team Kanor Cubes wchich includes our friend Louise Betita won the TORCH 5: SM Manila leg and will be going to Cosplay Mania 14 to battle 8 other teams for the right to be called grand champions.

Lots of cosplayers attended the event who came from all over the country just to take part in the contests and festivities.  And of course the cosplayers enjoyed the event by mixing it up with the crowd.  They posed happily with avid and curious, as well as had their shots taken by photographers.  We were glad to have our Cosplay Model Nicolette join us in covering the event as well.

This is of course just a taste of what is to come at the main event at Cosplay Mania ’14, and of course we at arkadymac.com will be covering it as a media partner.  We hope to see you all there.

Cosplay Convention 2014 at SM City Novaliches

cosplay_convention_2014_sm_novaliches_0001

arkadymac.com has exclusive coverage of Cosplay Convention 2014 at SM City Novaliches last weekend.  Sponsored by SM Cyberzone and technology company O+ USA, it was an afternoon of fun and excitement as cosplayers got to share the fun and fascination of cosplay to the public.

cosplay_convention_2014_sm_novaliches_0039

As part of the Cyberzone month of the various SM malls around the country, Cosplay Convention 2014 aimed to get the public to better appreciate technology and other aspects of modern culture.  Cosplay has become a part of it and they have graciously offered the chance for cosplayers to take part in this event and offered great prizes as well.

cosplay_convention_2014_sm_novaliches_0011

The program started in earnest past 4pm with some introductions and the start of the cosplay parade which sawthe cosplayers going around the mall and letting people know of the event in their colorful costumes.  After making the rounds and returning to the stage, the competition started in earnest with 12 participants, including Nyanbu himself making a rare appearance.  Contestants were given ample time to introduce themselves on stage.  The first part of the contest was the O+ USA Air Shuffle dance contest where contestants got to incorporate O+’s Air Shuffle wave into their dance routine to the delight of the spectators. The cosplayers were into it and were quite creative in their dances.  In the end, our friend Johnny Taker won as he was the most amusing of them all, getting to take home a brand new O+ phone for his efforts.

cosplay_convention_2014_sm_novaliches_0035

Then came the cosplay competition where the cosplayers got to show their great costumes and talents to the audience.  The audience was quite appreciative and were cheering them on as the cosplayers performed their routines.  In the end, our friend Dennis Vicarth as GI Joe’s Snake Eyes won as champion.  From what we gather, he still couldn’t believe it as he admitted that it was his first time to win anything in his years of cosplaying.  Even more unbelievable for him was him receiving the grand prize of a brand  new O+ phone courtesy of the sponsor.

Coming in as runner up was our friend Yuna Akira as Death Master from BlackRock Shooter while our friend Bolen Lareza won as Best Chibi, winning nice SM Cinema cards.

Celebrity cosplayer Mina Monina was one of the judges of the event and helped out in awarding the prizes along with the representatives from SM and O+.  She was really nice and friendly and was gracious in having our photos taken with her.

After the program, the cosplayers got to have fun taking photos with the crowd who came to watch and participate in the event.  For us cosplayers, it makes us really happy to have our cosplay appreciated by others.

7th Philippine Cosplay Convention 2014, Day 2

PCC2014Day2__0024

Sorry for the late release of our post on the second day of the 7th Philippine Cosplay Convention.  It has been quite a hectic but exciting weekend.  Hundreds of cosplayers were in attendance and it was a challenge to try to get as many of them on my camera.

PCC2014Day2__0074

In a year and a half of covering over 70 cosplay events, sometimes it’s hard for me to get excited about any particular convention.  That wasn’t the case for Philippine Cosplay Convention 2014.  I’ve been waiting for it since the last one last year.  Why you ask?  It’s a great event that celebrates a really broad spectrum of cosplay genres and categories where you get to see really fresh and amazing cosplays from all over the Philippines.  Oh, and it’s held at Robinson’s Place Manila too.  I personally think the events there are the absolute best.  Entrance is free, the venue is relatively open and spacious, and their staff and security are particularly courteous.  If it isn’t obvious yet, I like attending events here.

PCC2014Day2__0010

The 7th Philippine Cosplay Convention was organized by Cosplay.ph in partnership with Hobbiworx Inc. and Robinson’s Place Manila.  Boasting of being the longest running free event for all cosplay enthusiasts, it was a well-attended event, with veterans, newbies and regular congoers particularly eager to be there and to be seen and to partake in the many attractions during the event, like exhibits, cosplay contests, performances, anime and cosplay auctions.

PCC2014Day2__0017

The Midtown Atrium of Robinson Place Manila in Ermita was bustling with activity as even ordinary mallgoers got to experience the event along with the regular patrons, particularly curious of the various merchandise booths selling toys, wigs, costumes, accessories and many more.

PCC2014Day2__0012

One of the featured events on the second day was the Filipino Cosplay Category where contestants cosplay characters from Filipino pop culture.  Of the handful of great cosplayers who participated, Justin Lavio as Grava Man of Kidlat won the top prize.

There was also the Dragon Nest Cosplay Contest sponsored by Cherry Credits.   Dragon Nest is a popular MMORPG and contestants had great cosplays based on the characters from the game.  The winner was Izaiah Luke Buelos as Black Dragon.

PCC2014Day2__0058

Then there was the Group Cosplay contest where teams of cosplayers gave great performances in front of the crowd.  The winner was the Arrow cosplay team.

PCC2014Day2__0051

The second day of the event was as enjoyable as the first, but with more cosplayers, some having attended the first day as well.  Cosplayers were mingling with the crowds and having their photos taken.  For me it was another chance to get as many of them as I can on my camera.

PCC2014Day2__0022

I cosplayed again that day as I took coverage photos of the event.  Again it was tough doing both but it makes me very happy being able to enjoy the benefits of being a photographer and cosplayer.  As night came I just took it easy and spent time catching up with old friends and getting to know new ones.  PCC 2014 was all I expected it to be and more and I definitely consider it as one of the better cosplay events this year.

The Midtown Atrium of Robinson Place Manila in Ermita was bustling with activity as even ordinary mallgoers got to experience the event along with the regular patrons, particularly curious of the various merchandise booths selling toys, wigs, costumes, accessories and many more.

PCC2014Day1_0225

The program was hosted by Brad and Fatima, mainstays of these events.  The first cosplay category was the historical cosplay where folks in mostly historical military costumes performed in front of the crowd.  The winner for that category was Emmanuel Ortega who cosplayed Spanish Governor-General Ortega and gave a monologue in pure Spanish.

PCC2014Day1_0219

The most awaited category of the whole convention was the Solo Cosplay Tag Competition.  The cosplay tag is a fun twist to the usual cosplay catwalk  wherein cosplayer come up with skits or fight scenes or whatever strikes their fancy to the other participants before and after them.

PCC2014Day1_0004

At the end of the day, winners included: Isabel Cortez for Best Craftmaship, Rowyn Sanggayan for Best Performance, Maria Angelica Magdaso for Best Child, Izaiah Luke Buelos for Best Robot or Mecha, Mark Anthony Vibas  for Best Male, and Erika Garbin for Best Female, winning two straight years in a row.  Winners received gift certificates from Robinsons and giveaways from event sponsors.

PCC2014Day1_0180

The first day of the event was quite exciting and enjoyable, with a couple hundred cosplayers mingling with the crowds and having their photos taken.  For me it was a chance to see old friends, meet new ones, and establish ties with other organizations which are part of the cosplay community.

PCC2014Day1_0159

I took over a thousand photos that day while in my ANBU cosplay.  It’s a bit tougher than usual, but I really enjoy being both photographer and cosplayer.  When it was almost time for closing, I just enjoyed costripping.  Sure my costume really wasn’t a hit for photographers, but my character, Nyanbu, was quite popular with the children, and making them smile was a welcome reward for the effort I put in throughout the day.  As it all that weren’t enough, I had to cover the second day as well, ahahahaha.  Please visit our post for the second day as well.

Because it’s my Birthday

IMG_3140

The morning of my birthday I went to Quiapo Church.  I heard mass.  I had confession.  I told the priest that one of my many faults was that I have been ungrateful to the people I know.  For penance he told me to say 10 Hail Marys for each person I should be thankful for.  After two hours or so I lost count.   I thanked God for my wonderful, supportive family.  I thanked God for my loving, understanding girlfriend.  I thanked God for my old friends who have never left me.  I thanked God for the students who still remember me when I still taught them college English.  I thanked God for the kind cosplayers I have met this year.  I thanked God for the amazing photographers who took the time to be my mentors and my friends.  I thanked God for the generous people from all around the world who have supported my website.  My knees and thighs hurt from kneeling, but I realized I am lucky to have known so many wonderful people.  I realized that since I started blogging, photography and cosplaying, I’ve gained more friends than all my other years of existence combined.

IMG_3182

So yeah, am really happy on my birthday, and I have all of you to thank for it.  God willing I’ll continue what I started.  I don’t know for how long, but this coming year I’ll make sure I’ll make every day count.

Invitational Otaku Urule Photoshoot 12 (IOP12)

iop12_0031

The staff of arkadymac.com had a great time covering IOP 12,  or Invitational Otaku Urule Photoshoot 12, the latest in a series of photoshoots for cosplayers and photographers alike.  Organized by Otaku Urule, a student-based organization which promotes Japanese pop culture in the country, quite a number of cosplayers and photographers gathered at the scenic Chinese Garden in historic Rizal Park, all excited at the prospects of another great time being with each other.

iop12_0063

iop12_0001

The latest edition of IOP 12 stays true to all others that have come before it:  an event where cosplayers and photographers work together and have a great time. Otaku URule has always maintained that the goal of these activities is  to reinvent the system of cosplay networking in the country where all participants have closer ties and as they maintain old friendships and foster new ones.  As they have always reminded the hundreds of participants in the past, the only things you have to remember are to have fun, meet friends, respect one another and enjoy.

iop12_0030

The theme for IOP12 was Loli Invasion.   The event officially started in the morning, with the registration as well as announcements and reminders from the Otaku Urule staff.  As always, cosplayers took the opportunity to don their chosen attire in homage to the characters they have come to  love and admire.  Everyone  was everywhere, having pictorials all over the garden with all its interesting places and sights to see.

iop12_0026

The event ended at sundown with final group pictures and words of gratitude from the organizers for the support and enthusiastic participation of all who came that day.

iop12_0038

Our heartfelt thanks to Otaku Urule for yet another successful affair and making it all possible.  Do visit their Facebook pages for more information about them and their upcoming events.

Cosplay Documentary Taping

IMG_5066

arkadymac.com is honored being given the opportunity to cover the making of an upcoming documentary on cosplaying in  the Philippines.  Although most details cannot be divulged yet at the time of this post, Director Maila Gumila has told us that it aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of cosplaying as a performance art, as a hobby, an as a cultural phenomenon.

IMG_5360

Xtian Mack, Creative Director of arkadymac.com, was invited to an interview about his insights into the year’s worth of experience of cosplaying, covering events, blogging, and photography.  He even agreed to be interviewed without his mask for this one, since he thinks it’ll be found out sooner or later anyway.  His loyal fans (all two of them) are definitely excited to see him without the mask.  So that’s certainly something to look forward to.  And while there, Xtian Mack was granted the privilege of covering the filming and take some behind-the-scenes photos for the website.

IMG_5311

Also invited were several other cosplayers from diverse backgrounds and whose characters represented different genres.  Several of them were also interviewed about their experiences in cosplaying and how they’ve come to love it.  All of them had video clips taken of in their cosplays and showing off their best moves.

IMG_5262

While the airing of the documentary hasn’t been announced to us yet, Director Maila Gumila   assures us that it will be a serious, in-depth and meaningful program about the reality of cosplaying in the Philippines that shares the experiences of real cosplayers who share this passion.  Ma’am Maila has been truly generous with us on the set and I have come to admire her intensity, passion and sincere interest in bringing the truth about cosplaying to a wider audience.

IMG_5090

IMG_5026

We would like to thank Director Maila Gumila and the rest of her professional, skilled and courteous ataff and Ma’am Bessie for inviting us.  I am personally very excited to see this one and look forward to sharing this documentary with everyone the moment it comes out.

Cosplay Mania 2013, Day 2

fansigntemplate

Day 2 of Cosplay Mania ’13 was nothing short of a phenomenon, being the most-attended events in memory.  I had been looking forward to Cosplay Mania ’13 for the longest time because it was the first event I cosplayed in, so attending would mark my first year of cosplaying.  The past year has been quite a ride and I have been to many cosplay events, big and small, and each time I cannot help look back to the first time I wore a mask and a cloak. Today I was back at SMX where it all began and I remember the day when I saw all these amazing people in costumes ranging from the simple to the elaborate. The great photos for Day 2 were taken by our lead photographer Bryan.

cosplaymania2013d2_0401

There was a great assortment of people whose creativity overflowed in colors, shapes and textures, as if I was in the world of anime and games that I have longed to be in.  I was a part of this world where there were people who, just like me, longed to recreate this world, even if it was only for a short time.  Cosplay Mania ’13 promised to be the biggest cp event of the year, and from the looks of it, it was, spanning 3 convention halls of the SMX.  Around 40,000 people bought tickets and the place was overflowing with cosplayers, enthusiasts, otaku, photographers, the curious, and everything in between.

cosplaymania2013d2_0461

I finally got to bring my little arkadymac.com family together Cosplay Mania ’13: Kaloy, our Public Relations Officer and poster boy; Stephanie, our correspondent and official Genki Girl; Mao-chan, sessionist photographer and editor, and Bryan, our lead photographer.  Nicole, our premier model was also there to celebrate with us, as well as many other cosplayers, photographers and supporters who have believed in what arkadymac.com stood for: a place where people can go to see and share their love of cosplay.  Special thanks to those who have helped me out during this event, all my cosplay friends who have been with me since the very start, my Nakama Cosplay Group, and to those of you who have supported this blog, you have my gratitude.  Thank you.
