Kill la Kill Cosplay Group Shoot

Kill la Kill cosplay group shoot_0001

We chanced upon a group of cosplayers having fun one warm Sunday at Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in Quezon City.  Every so often, small cosplay groups take it upon themselves to organize simple photoshoots at familiar places.  As cosplay events and conventions may be far in between sometimes, these photoshoots present rare opportunities for some bonding time among friends and present chances to meet new ones.

Cosplayers, photographers, and enthusiasts once again show that they are always eager to lend a helping hand as over a hundred of them participated at National Cosplayers of the Philippines’ Photoshoot for a Cause 2015: Pictures of Hope last weekend at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife in Quezon City.  arkadymac.com is the official media partner of the event

Mina Kim: Adventures

After her radio talk show appearance at Radyo Inquirer DZIQ 990 and just before her special guest appearance at Otacon with the arkadymac.com team, Mina went with us on a short detour for a quick shoot at a place she had never been before somewhere south of the Metro.  Earnestly curious and inquisitive, she took time off exploring this unique Japanese enclave hidden in the heart of the city.   In between snaps she tells us how her life has been one fun and exciting journey since she began cosplaying, with warm and fond memories she’ll keep for lifetime.

We caught up with some cosplayers promoting the Visit Japan booth at the PTAA Travel Tour Expo 2015 last weekend at the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia.  Cosplay figures prominently in modern Japanese culture and our cosplayer friends have been selected to help extend Japan’s invitation to visit their country.

Keileen: Looks Could Kill

keileen_sasuko_1st_feature_0001

From how one would at look at her when she portrays her fierce characters, one wouldn’t think she was a timid girl who only started cosplaying a year ago.  Yet Keileen has come into her own, becoming a recognized cosplayer who simply loves the thrill of being the character she portrays.  We of course had to invite her to be arkadymac.com’s latest Cosplay Model.  Presenting Keileen in her first online feature, photography by Xtian Mack, post-processing by our guest editor, Ecko.

keileen_sasuko_1st_feature_0002

For our feature, she cosplays Sasuko, the genderbent vesion of Naruto’s Sasuke Uchiha.  ” I love portraying fierce characters, those who look harmless but are actually very strong,” she shares.  “I love the way they look innocent and are underestimated, but in the end they are stronger and fiercer than anyone could imagine.  Characters like  Erza, Lucy, and Dokuro Chrome are ones I aspire for.  I admire Dokuro Chrome the most as she had a very sad past but I love how she kept up with it with a smiling face.”

keileen_sasuko_1st_feature_0015

She recounts cosplaying Misa Amane from Death Note at her first event when she started just last year.  “I guess most girls start out with Misa,” she says with a smile.  She got into cosplay when her professor gave her the suggestion since she liked anime so much and thought she resembled a character from one of them.  At the time she was really very shy, but cosplaying has given her more self-confidence as she went on, going to as many events as she possibly can.  “When I cosplay I feel like I’m in the world of anime itself, and it makes me so happy.”

 keileen_sasuko_1st_feature_0013

“I cosplay to express my love for anime,” she explains as her reason why she continues with the hobby.  “I get to dress up and look like the characters I have come to love and admire, and at events when people recognize my character,  I feel extremely happy.”

keileen_sasuko_1st_feature_0020

Keileen tells us cosplay opened up a lot of new doors for her.  “I made a lot of friends through cosplaying.  I get to experience new things like being independent, learning to travel on my own, and being  sociable, as I’m more used to staying in a corner in the past.”

keileen_sasuko_1st_feature_0017

Outside of cosplaying, Keileen tells us she’s still much of a kid and likes to play games a lot.  “I love war games and RPG games,” she admits.  “I enjoy drawing too, mostly anime characters since I enjoy watching series and anime of every kind of genre imaginable.”

We of course gave her the chance to say a few words to those who have supported her.  “Thank you to my professor who gave me the idea of cosplaying.   Thank you to my parents who let me cosplay.  Thank you to my family who cheer for me.  Thank you to my classmates who support me. I want to thank everyone since they all have become a part of my life.”

keileen_sasuko_1st_feature_0012

As of now, she’s busy with her studies but whenever she gets the chance, count on her to be at events being surrounded by people admiring her great portrayals.  And how long does she intend to cosplay?  “Until I have kids to cosplay with,” she laughs.  “I don’t know. I don’t think I’ll stop.”

We hope that you can all continue to support Keileen, and  you can all be sure that we’ll be more than happy to feature her here again at arkadymac.com.

NCP Cosplay Picture Mo, Tulong Mo

NCP_Cosplay_Picture_Mo_Tulong_Ko_0001

It’s now our second year of covering a National Cosplayers of the Philippines charity event.  Called “Cosplay Picture Mo, Tulong Mo,”  the group aims to collect enough funds for school supplies that would benefit 500 children from Brgy. Maybancal, Morong, Rizal.

NCP_Cosplay_Picture_Mo_Tulong_Ko_0008

Cosplayers, photographers, enthusiasts, and other members of the otaku community show that they are always eager to  lend a helping hand as over a hundred of them were given the chance to do so at the event held last May 4, 2014 at the Ninoy Aquino parks and Wildlife in Quezon City.

This unique experience was organized by the National Cosplayers of the Philippines, an organization that has held many such events since its inception in 2010 involving cosplay as a means to raise funds for charitable causes and institutions.  This time around, participants were asked to bring notebooks, pencils and other school supplies for distribution to the needy schoolchildren  of Brgy. Maybarical, Morong, Rizal on May 25, 2014.

NCP_Cosplay_Picture_Mo_Tulong_Ko_0048

A lot of cosplayers and photographers were on hand to take part in the occasion, where cosplayers were paired with photographers as they took turns for individual and group photoshoots in the many different and fascinating locations inside the Ninoy Aquino parks and Wildlife in Quezon City.  Although the summer heat and humidity can be a little too much for anyone to bear, and the “traditional” downpour in the afternoon, the cosplayers and photographers still persevered in making sure they have the best poses for the best photographs possible.

NCP_Cosplay_Picture_Mo_Tulong_Ko_0043

Members of NCP and some cosplayers also made rounds around the park collecting donations from park-goers and afforded them the opportunity to take photos with them.

arkadymac.com sent out its Public Relations Officer Kaloy to help out in this event.  We’re also glad to have our Cosplay Model Czyrah participate in this event as a cosplayer.

At day’s end, all the participants have had their fill and more of photographs and stories to share about the event. What’s more of course are the boxes of school supplies and other donations for the children of Morong.  The National Cosplayers of the Philippines has always fostered the notion that cosplayers can have fun while helping others, and this was very evident from the enjoyment the participants had from joining.

NCP_Cosplay_Picture_Mo_Tulong_Ko_0004

We at arkadymac.com thank he National Cosplayers of the Philippines for a job well done in organizing this photoshoot and giving cosplayers the chance to make a difference in someone else’s life through this charity event.  We and many others look forward to attending and covering more such events in the future.

Otaku Encore Cosplay Idol Season 2 at Starmall Las Pinas

cosplayidols2laspinas_0002
arkadymac.com was on hand to cover Otaku Encore Cosplay Idol Season 2 at Starmall Las Pinas last Sunday, January 26, 2014.  It was one of two final legs for the the main event this year at Starland, Starmall Alabang, Pinoy Otakufest.  The event was dedicated to the memory of Sir Wilfredo Gruet Jr., a cosplayer who recently passed away.
cosplayidols2laspinas_0081
Helping us out in our coverage is the lovely Jillian, our guest coverage partner, an able photographer and cosplayer in her own right.  Well, we just had fun going around, mingling with the crowd, taking snapshots, joining in the contest, and for most of the time we were just goofing around, having fun like everyone else there.
cosplayidols2laspinas_0019
More than a hundred cosplayers besides the many enthusiasts were there to take part in the event, which featured games, booths, performances, special guests, and a karaoke contest to the delight of everyone.
cosplayidols2laspinas_0073
The highlight on course was the cosplay competition, which saw over 40 contestants vying for the top spots with huge prizes.  All the contestants gave their all in their performances, and also had to answer a few questions from the judges.  In the end, the winners were  Mico Villarca for Best Male, Ianah Otaku for Best Female, Icee Ticar for Best Chibi, Jay-ar Dela Cruz for Best Mecha/Armor and Cykah Malagad was named Cosplay Idol for this leg.

Besides the competitor, it was also a delight to just go around and meet and take photos of the other cosplayers present at the event.  They had fun mingling with the crowd and having their photos taken.
cosplayidols2laspinas_0005
All in all a fun and exciting event in a rather new venue.  Congratulations to the organizers, NCPH, and their partners and sponsors.  All this however, is just a warm-up to the main event scheduled later this year, so we really look forward to more real soon.
