Cosplay Mania ’14: Day 2

arkadymac.com got to cover Cosplay Mania ’14: Day 2 as its media affiliate over the weekend.  Thousands upon thousands of people poured into the SMX to take part of this grand yearly spectacle, which is undoubtedly the biggest cosplay event of the year.  And being the most anticipated cosplay event of the year, Cosplay Mania draws in more and more attendees each year, coming from not only all over the Philippines, but also from all over the world, filling the SMX Convention Center at the SM Mall of Asia to capacity during the entire length of this exciting two-day event.

In light of its successes in recent years, the Philippines’ premiere cosplay convention, Cosplay Mania, is taking another step forward to reach ‘world class’ status with Cosplay Mania Evolution!  Cosplay Mania Evolution promises to deliver even more thrills for fans of cosplay, anisong, anime, manga, and gaming in the Philippines and the rest of South East Asia.  Cosplay Mania Evolution has revitalized the Cosplay Tournament of Champions (TorCh), mixing in a new flavor that will certainly bring more depth and life to the competition! The TorCh Mentor system has been implemented, where each team will be assigned mentors to help them win the honor of representing the country in the Anime Festival Asia Regional Cosplay Championships, to be held in Singapore in December 2014.  Nine very competitive teams battled it out for the right to be crowned champion, but in the end, Team Kanor Cubes from the SM Manila leg won the honor with an exciting BTX performance that had the international judges nothing short of impressed.  Congratulations to the team of Louise and Brahms, and we wish them well preparing for the Anime Festival Asia Regional Cosplay Championships in Singapore.

The event also features Meet-and-Greets with world-class cosplayers such as the all-time favorite KANAME☆ and Reika, along with international cosplayers Orochi X, Pinky, Vic and Jesuke. Cosplay Mania Evolution has even increased its stellar roster to include Japanese authority on cosplay Tatsumi Inui, and American cosplay superstar Vampy Bit Me.

There were activities, games, and giveaways, the awesome music,  stellar cosplay performances all throughout the day, so everyone was sure to be busy enjoying themselves.  Prominent celebrity cosplayer Liui Aquino was there for autograph signings and appearances at the Cosmic Bytes Cosplay Shop booth and at the Otaku Asia booth for autograph signings, and the fans couldn’t get enough of him, with along line eagerly waiting for their turn to take a photo, a selfie, and share some words with their idol.  Liui told us that he was really overwhelmed and very grateful to the people who turned up to support him.

An attraction I really liked was the Magic the Gathering Booth where attendees are invited to learn the game and play with their friends while being assisted by an experienced demo team.  As a player since 1994, it has been the first time they held an event of this scale in the Philippines, complete with a photobooth, displays, and rows upon rows of gaming tables.  I took part in it while in cosplay, and it was real fun seeing other cosplayers learn about it too.  After a game with the demo decks provided, participants even get to have a deck of 30 cards of a color of their choice.  I even got to chat with the demo team who said this event is truly one of a kind and I hope I get to see more of these in the future.

Other interesting things we saw were the Doraemon mascots, the giant Pikachu that was irresistibly cute even to the coldest of hearts, and Mogu Mogu with its mascot breaking it down with the crowd to the latest dance hits.

To end the event with a bang, Cosplay Mania Evolution featured the first ever JAM: Japanese Anime Music Concert in the Philippines, headlined by Aya Ikeda — the voice behind the theme songs of popular animes such as Heartcatch Precure!, Kindaichi Case Files and the online games “Finding Neverland Online” and “Harezora Monogatari.” She and other performers gave the attendees a night of amazing music to remember.

On the second day of our coverage, we wanted to focus more on the thousands of cosplayers who came to take part in this grand spectacle.  The SMX was filled to capacity with cosplayers from all over the country, some taking the rare trip to Manila just to be part of Cosplay Mania.  We of course had a grand time taking pictures of friends, old and new, since opening to closing late at night.  After the JAM Concert,  Cosplay Mania ’14 finally ended, leaving much fun and memories for all those who attended.  They look forward to next year’s installment, one even bigger as it will cover Function Halls 1-5 on October 3-4, 2015.

Cosplay Mania ’14: Day 0

cosplay_mania_14_day_0_0001

We were there for Cosplay Mania ’14: Day 0, the ingress for the event.  Ingress is that often-frantic time when exhibitors and organizers are busy getting ready for the main event, as bringing supplies, materials, props, merchandise, and setting up booths and the stage can be quite the challenge.  It offers us a sneak peek into the process of making of the biggest cosplay event of the year.

cosplay_mania_14_day_0_0008

Function rooms 4 and 5 of the SMX Convention Center was bustling with activity as  exhibitors alike get ready setting their respective booths up and as the organizers prepare the stage and other attractions of the event.  Noticeable is the grand stage where the program will take place and where the international guests and performers will be making their appearances.  They were readying their giant Cosplay Mania ’14 tarps as well.

Some booths were already set up and running, like this online game booth for Phantasy Star and DC Universe Online.

Then there’s the Cosmic Bytes booth, where you can get your cosplay needs from the latest wigs, costumes, accessories and contact lenses at the most agreeable prices.  Make sure to drop by as Liui Aquino is slated to make a special appearance that one shouldn’t miss.

Also make sure to drop by the PID Clothing booth, where you can get the latest anime-inspired hoodies with the most creative designs.  Better drop by as early as you can as their stocks run out very quickly.

Cosplay Mania 12 as the Philippines’ Biggest Cosplay Event of the Year Coverage

“Then it goes BOOM!” Nurse Joker said with a grin.

The biggest cosplay event in the Philippines this year, Cosplay Mania ’12, the fifth such event in the country, was held on two consecutive weekends, September 29 and 30, 2012 at the grand SMX Convention Center Function Rooms 3 to 5, SM Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.  It was such a jam-packed event with over 5,000 attendees with a long itinerary last from 11:00am to 9:00pm for both days.  As expected, it was a crazy even filled with all sorts of people: stunning celebrities, curious onlookers, crazed cosplayers, screaming fangirls, baffled tourists, and of course, there was me, Xtian Mack, in my cosplay debut, 35 years of age and dressed up as a ninja.  You know why?  Because it’s fun, that’s why.
The people organizing the event,  Cosplay.ph Organization, Inc. has lived up to its promise of hosting Cosplay Mania 12 as the biggest and most memorable gathering of cosplayers indeed as they have invited internationally-renowned professional cosplayers:  Jesuke, Kaname, and Reika–all of whom were stunning and gracious as guests and judges for the different events.  They were really nice and loved the warm reception of Filipino fans, particularly Kaname, who had screaming fangirls all over her and fantasizing many yaoi things with him.
As for the tickets, the full access pass was worth P250 while the hall entry pass was P150.  It might have cost a bit, since other cosplay events are usually free but for a whole day’s worth of zany fun and crazy sights and surprise celebrities, it was well worth the cost.
As an event that may as well be the last sign before the apocalypse, this is one event that this site certainly cannot forgo, which is why this site’s best writer, coincidentally it’s only writer, Xtian Mack, went to cover Cosplay Mania ’12.  Because of the perils of mass hysteria,  crazed yaoi fangirls, overcrowding and diarrhea, Xtian Mack set off to the venue armed only with a pack of kropek, leather armor, a kunai, a scroll of petrification, and a scroll of turn undead into friends.  May the gods have mercy on his soul.
Many thanks to the writer’s brother, Buraimaku, for the absolutely wonderful pics for absolutely free.  If that ain’t what makes him the best brother in the world, I don’t know what will.
Xtian Mack makes his cosplay debut at the grandest cosplay stage of them all: Cosplay Mania ’12.

It’s all just fun and games until Nurse Joker brings out a detonator.

One of my personal favorites, She Hulk cosplayed by a guy. He was pretty convincing.

Xtian Mack with the hottest Matrix Reggae Twins on the planet.

Someone called Deadpool was a pretty nice and funny guy…until I found that sword lodged in my back afterwards.

I think I’d make a great sidekick to the Dark Knight. He was pretty confused though.

I asked Edward to cut a loose thread on the sleeve of my costume and in a flash I lost an arm. “Ooops!” he said.

If you don’t know this guy, you should. He’s our only defense against foreign aggression and territorial disputes–Captain DFA!

When I told him my character was Japanese, he hit me with his shield and called me a communist.

You should have seen this guy when he heard over the PA that his bike was stolen.

All of them, especially the Riddler, was clueless as who I was supposed to be.
Pretty folks dragged me into the All Nippon Airways booth and gave me free stuff even though I looked like someone who’ll never be allowed on a plane. I love ANA!
My happiest moments as a cosplayer were times when little girls come up to me and tell me they like my cat ears and touch them and ask to take a picture with me, like this adorable darling.

You get to have your picture taken with pretty maids too.

Being side by side with this fearsome female cosplayer, I realized that in comparison that I’m just a cute, defenseless kitten.

You’d think it’s a huge plastic statue until it points its laser rifle at you.

I give up. I don’t even have a ninja star on me.

Xtian Mack gets it on with K-on to the tune of Fwa Fwa Time(Fwa Fwa Time)

Demon Hunter from Diablo 3. He says he’s here because the server’s down.

Since I’m supposed to be a Naruto character, let’s feature Naruto-inspired costumes. Here’s a really cute Temari and a really convincing Orochimaru.

It’s funny when crazy people get together: Left to right: Naruto, Azuma, Kakashi, generic ANBU and someone who appears to be Momochi Zabuza. I’m not really sure.

A cute Tenten.

Two Tobis and me.

Sexy No Jutsu Naruto and Akatsuki Kakuzu

Akatsuki Wolf. I’ve just been told there’s no such thing but he’s so darned cute he should be one.

One of my most favorite characters, Mr.2, Bon Clay. Probably the best Okama ever.

Kenshin and Sanosuke from Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin

Some flashy get-up you got there, babe.

Me and Hatsune Miku, virtual diva.

What’s better than a picture with Miku? A picture with two MIkus of course.

Or a robotic Miku. I guess that one’s hard to top.

We’ve got more pics of the event itself, particularly those of the contests and the special foreign guests, so please visit us again in a day or two.  Thank you for visiting.

Cosplay Mania 12 as the Philippines’ Biggest Cosplay Event of the Year

In what promises to be the biggest cosplay event in the Philippines this year, Cosplay Mania ’12, the fifth such event in the country, will be held on two consecutive weekends, September 29 and 30, 2012 at the grand SMX Convention Center Function Rooms 3 to 5, SM Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.  It will be such a jam-packed event with a long itinerary that it will last from 11:00am to 9:00pm for both days.  With over 3,000 people who have already bought tickets last I checked Friday morning, expect this to be one crazy event.
The people organizing the event,  Cosplay.ph Organization, Inc., has vowed to make this a memorable gathering of cosplayers indee as they have invited internationally-renowned professional cosplayers:  Jesuke, Kaname, and Reika–all of whom are expected to add a bit more flair into the event.
As for the tickets, the full access pass is worth P250 while the hall entry pass is P150.  It might cost a bit, but for a whole day’s worth of zany fun and crazy sights, it might just be well worth the cost.

Check our site again in the upcoming days for an exclusive report on Cosplay Mania ’12.  Or better yet, be there.  We’ll meet you there!  Free hugs to anyone dressing up as Rei Ayanami or Asuka Langley Soryu.
