Cosplay Makeup and Wig Styling Tutorial Class

Cosplay is an art that requires a myriad of skills to hone and master, with makeup and wig styling as a couple of the most important.  Some cosplayers just make it look easy, while some need to spend to have someone else do those for them.  Thankfully cosplayer Vina Miyazaki and our photographer and meganekko Kami-kun decided to hold a class instead of just doing one-on-one sessions. Despite the difficulties of organizing a class for the very first time, Vina and Kami’s efforts got enough people to attend class at What the Tea place in Banawe, Quezon City.

Cosplay Model Czyrah

Czyrah: Sunshine on a Cloudy Day

czyrah_0026

 Czyrah as Vocaloid IA.

The cloudy days of June are seldom ideal for photoshoots. For one thing, the lighting can be difficult to work with. Then there is that chance of rain that ruins the entire purpose of shooting outdoors.  Luckily, we had Czyrah as our cosplay model for the week, our sunshine on a cloudy day, a lady with a bright smile amid dark skies.  Photography, editing and effects by Brymac.

czyrah_0007

Czyrah has been cosplaying for quite a while, although she had to stop for other pursuits. Now she finds herself drawn back to the cosplay scene, rediscovering the joy that comes with bringing a fictional character to life,  the same feeling she had the first time she decided to cosplay.

czyrah_0008

And why does she cosplay? “Cosplaying is not just a hobby for me,” Czyrah tells us.  “I can express myself through it. I can show to people who I am through my chosen characters.”

czyrah_0009

Czyrah claims to have alter egos:  Kleo, her boyish side, and Tera, her girly side. These two aspects of herself have allowed her to portray a wide range of characters, from the sweet to the brash, from the shy to the brave, from the frail to the strong.  Characters she had cosplayed include Vocaloids Megurine Luka and IA, Nami (LCD’O), Sephiroth from Advent Children, Killua from Hunter X Hunter, Mei Misaki from Another, and Tifa from Crisis Core.

czyrah_0003

She admits to being quite the gamer. “I love playing the Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts, Parasite Eve, Third Birthday, God Eater Burst, Resident Evil series, Tekken, Children of Mana, Ragnarok, and most of all, Pokemon. ” Czyrah also enjoys watching anime of all kinds, although she prefers the gory, bloody ones that only the horror genre can provide.  These games and anime provide much of the inspiration for her many cosplays.

czyrah_0004

Although already cosplaying for quite a while, Czyrah says it’s still challenging.  She takes pride in making her own costumes, props and accessories, usually from scratch, because she really wants to give justice to the characters she portray.  She’ll also have a hard time sleeping when she gets excited for an event and when preparing the details of her cosplay, but probably the biggest challenge she faces, she admits, is saving up enough funds for a costume she’s yearning for.

czyrah_0017

Czyrah as Si from Dream of Doll

Czyrah says her cosplaying has been one amazing journey, and she would like to thank God for the blessings, and her parents who have brought her up and continued supporting her.  She also thanks the people who never supported her, never believed in her, because in trying to prove them wrong, she had become a tougher, stronger person.

czyrah_0019

Czyrah as Mei Misaki from Another

Although she may still have a lot to go through, she wishes to share something from her own experience regarding life and cosplay: “Never ever stop conquering your fears. You can only learn from something when you’re done with it. Never be afraid of failing.  Failures will make you stronger. Always think that the world is your runway.  You walk by yourself and stand by your own feet. It is your choice to be what you want to be, not the choice of those who keep hating you.”

czyrah_0025

Czyrah tells us that she’ll never stop cosplaying, because it is already a part of who she is.  it is our sincerest hope that you’ll join us in supporting her on her journey.

ANBUracay: Nyanbu’s Beach Adventure

ANBUracay001e

Even the seemingly tireless ninja Nyanbu needs to take a break, but unfortunately for him, this still isn’t the time as he is sent to a remote location to do a photoshoot of a crazy person on the beach.  Boracay, that small, wonderful island off Aklan, makes the perfect location for a “Welcome, Summer!” special for this blog.  And much to the chagrin of Nyanbu, when he opened his backpack, there was only a costume and no swimwear. Oh woe is Nyanbu.  With tears in his eyes and sand in his pants, arkadymac.com proudly brings you ANBUracay: Nyanbu’s Beach Adventure.

The island of Boracay is an amazing place where people get treated to the  tropical adventure people dream of while busy behind their desks at work  You do indeed forget everything else as you leave your usual life behind and just indulge in pleasures only a small, remote can provide.  And for Nyanbu that means leaving his work as an English QA and editor behind and, hmm, but apparently cannot leave his cosplaying behind.  So still work, if you can call it such.

Please enjoy the great photos courtesy of our great photoman Buraimaku.  Please click on a photo to view the slideshow.  Thank you all for your support.

Cosplay Market Coverage

CosMar1596_resize

Xtian Mack covered the Cosplay Market event at Jackman Plaza and Munoz and arrived to see a not-so-stellar turnout.  Nevertheless, it was an opportunity to improve his photography skills since he can focus and really pay good attention to the few cosplayers, himself included, who were at the event.  It should have been a better event at a bigger, more well-known venue.  Sorry Jackman.  Everyone from Caloocan knows and maybe even loves you, but let’s face it, it can be a hard sell.  Anyway, will just post the gallery as thanks to the brave souls who cosplayed yesterday so they can get a part of my not-so-stellar-but-hopefully-improving skills.

Happy holidays from Nyanbu and Miku.

Woo-hoo! Is it just me or did this year just end too fast? What? Time is constant and that it’s just me? How absurd. Einstein would turn in his grave.  Speaking of geniuses, Xtian Mack and Obito-kun cover two days’ worth of cosplay fun at the Ozine Fest Anime Figure Special 2012, the last major cosplay event this year.

New Year in Bulacan Cosplay Coverage

Happy New Year, everyone, from the entire staff of the Xtian Mack Cosplay website (all three of them).

Happy New Year, everyone! Now on its fifth month of continued existence, this blog brings to you a New Year cosplay coverage of epic proportions.  Since the Christmas Cosplay Coverage in Bulacan (see previous posts) was such a smashing success (as there were only few isolated eyewitness accounts of a crazy person in a strange cat costume trying to mutilate cattle sex organs), the entire field staff (all two of them) of Xtian Mack: Journey to the Obnoxious, Overrated and Obscene decided to do it again, just with a new camera and different props.  Since we were also feeling holiday-ey. we incorporated fireworks into the shoot. We were in Bulacan, fireworks capital of the Philippines, after all. Despite the many hazards of using pyrotechnics, like burning hair, costumes or wigs, or worse, an immolating cosplayer,  we went through with it just to bring you something refreshingly different for the holidays.  That and we really can’t think of anything original.

I’m 36 and still alive. Thank you, everyone.

cosplay costume anbu mask cloak kunai wig naruto konoha ninja xtian mack shinobi japan anime

Thank you.

I’m turning 36 on December 31.  If I were asked a year ago what was the best thing about turning 36, I could only think of one thing and one thing only:

I can now legally marry someone half my age!

Well, not that I tried in previous years, but let’s get off that train of thought before this post takes an unpleasant turn, shall we?

As I turn 36, I look back to a year of adversity.  My hypertension took a turn for the worse and had palpitations that feel like heart attacks each and every day, and because of that, I was able to do something I once thought impossible: change.

1. Finally quit smoking after 18 years. (I used to consume at least a pack a day and now I wonder how.)
2. Lost 23 pounds.  (My body is constantly looking for all that weight it lost so I’m constantly hungry.)
3. Lost 6 inches off my waistline.  (My pants don’t fit no more.  Was surprised when one day I wore my briefs but it slipped down my legs.)
4. Exercise at least an hour a day.  (Mostly walking while listening to the coolest classic 90s hits like Jabongga, Bring Dat Booty(Over Here), Stars(I Hope you Comprehend), Boom-Shak-A-Lak, and Informer. Repeat all and loop.)
5. Cook simple, healthy meals by myself.  (I now love cooking with red bell pepper.)
6. Write creatively again by having this blog.  (I majored in English: Creative Writing, but it has been a decade since I last wrote something entirely creative, imaginative and fictional. Oh wait.  That was my resume.  Make that 15 years.)
7. Be more spontaneous, social and outgoing through cosplaying.  (From Mr. Antisocial to  strange fellow who can now make a few new friends every cosplay event.)

I have always resisted change because I thought I could just get by as I have always done.  When I meet friends and former students again and they ask me what’s new with me, I can only say, “Same old, same old,” and somehow found that comforting.  I was constantly afraid that change was too difficult to achieve.  It’s quite unfortunate that it took a serious medical condition to get me started changing myself for the better.  Don’t get me wrong.  I was entirely content living my life up to a year ago, but now I discovered that by changing just a little, I can appreciate my life just a little bit more.

One year of healthy changes may not be enough to overcome two decades of unhealthy, careless living, and I might die anyway this year, but at least I went down fighting.  But for now, I’ll be turning 36 and I’m still alive. I have a lot to be grateful for.  I thank my family and friends who have been nothing but supportive despite my difficult personality.   I now realize, more than ever, that I am lucky to have all of you.

Continue supporting me because I realized that just being positive is hard enough when you’re alone.  It just takes one bad day alone to set you back down that slippery slope of depression.  So please help me by visiting my blog daily, reading my posts, browsing through the pictures, liking it on the page or on Facebook, or by leaving a comment.  Any comment.  It won’t cost you a cent.  I really don’t make money from this blog, but knowing that people read my work makes me really happy and makes my heart pound with delight.  Oh wait.  Those are palpitations.

Thank you, everyone.  I am 36 and alive because of your support.

So in conclusion, please allow me to marry an 18-year-old girl.  Thank you.

Christmas in Bulacan Cosplay Coverage

Why was I running through the fields on a Christmas morning? Because that’s what ninjas do on a Christmas morning.

(Please click on a photo to view slideshow)

Ho ho ho.  Smelly Christmas! Since Santa was too busy spreading presents and happiness somewhere else in the world, Nyanbu was spreading mayhem and mischief in the plains of Bulacan, unnerving neighbors and terrifying the local populace.  Well, not quite.  Everyone there was still sleeping after tiring themselves out on Christmas Eve, leaving Nyanbu a purrfect photo ops opportunity, spending an entire morning running through the fields.  Why?  Because that’s what ninjas do on Christmas morning, that’s why.  Much gratitude to my brother Buraimaku for the excellent pics.  Goes on to show how even a a silly nut in a costume can look cool through serious talent with a camera.

Happy holidays, everyone!

Cosplay Tournament of Champions 3: Third Impact!

Cosplay Tournament of Champions 3: Third Impact! poster

A preliminary leg of this tournament was held at SM City North Edsa’s Annex Cyberzone Activity Area Saturday, August 25, 2012.  Quite a number of cosplayers turned up and were very enthusiastic.  Onlookers wanted to take part in the action as well and just had to take snapshots with the cosplayers they fancied.  All in all a relaxed, friendly and accommodating atmosphere for everyone.  Participants and onlookers alike had plenty of fun.

Our correspondent Tobi risks peril being able to see only with one eye just to report from the field.

As my Anbu costume was still in the works after much deliberation and feet-dragging, our mysterious friend Tobi was commissioned to be our correspondent for this assignment since he was already in his costume when we found him. His equally mysterious girlfriend was also commissioned to be the photographer for this assignment.  Ain’t we lucky to have such great friends who’ll help you out of a pinch?

Check out some of the great pics Tobi made with his new-found cosplay friends.

Tobi with Nekomimi Girl. Fine! Yet again I have no idea who she’s supposed to be. You’d think after watching 300+ anime I would know. By the way, the security guards in the background were beating up a random pervert. I swear it still hurts.

No one dared get close to him on the escalator. Nurse Joker certainly knows how to make an entrance ,,, and a pose.

The Batman’s looney friends: Harley Quinn and Scarecrow.

What’s that pesky web crawler doing here? What? SM really means Spider Man?

These guys were my favorites to win: Kaede Rukawa and Hanamichi Sakuragi. A shocker they didn’t win.
