The Philippines had its first Anime Idol Convention, AICON, last January 12, 2019, at the Bayanihan Center in Pasig. The event was, as the name suggests, filled with idols, particularly ones from anime series or movies. Fans were free to cosplay and admire their favorite idols, and a good number of them got to show off their talents as well .as they participated in the many exciting and enjoyable contests on stage.
Engaging and putting the spotlight on an entire growing community of fans and enthusiasts who loved anime idols, AICON had 3 contests at the heart of its program: Ai-Live, Beat Master, and Mr. and Ms. AiCon. All were well received and were fervently participated in by fans from all over.
The arkadymac.com is AICON’s official media partner, and the team had a chance to engage with the people behind AICON, PCT – Pygmalia Creative Team.
Arkadymac: How did AICON start?
PCT: AICON started out of the organizer’s love for anime idols. We, producers, are anime idols enthusiasts in the first place. It has been a demand back then for an idolcon so we decided to hold this event. (And of course to meet more idol fans around MM). I, Sei (S.Yu), started this project with my friends, AKA with other producers; Pao, Ria and Gen. We are friends with so much love for the things we love so we decided to do this project together and see how much love and support does the anime idol fandom has. It wasn’t the first time I handled an event. I handled other projects before such as Seiyuu Fans gathering (I’m also an admin from SEUPH – Seiyuu Enthusiasts Union PH) and other events that concerns the organization and I’m also a staff of SVC (Stammi Vicino Cafe) that holds themed anime cafes yearly.
Arkadymac: How was your experience holding Aicon?
PCT: We gain so much experience through AICON. Since it’s the first time for most of us handling a bigger scale event, we learned a lot from people around us. We go to cons observe. We enjoyed the growth we gain from organizing AICON because it affected us positively. Those sleepless nights are worth it considering how AICON became really special not only to us but for others who attended as well.
Arkadymac: Is there any possibility of future Aicon events?
PCT: We have no plans yet but considering how it went then we might consider an encore this year or a 2020? hahaha. We’re still undecided so those 2020 requests from supporters are making us want to do another (marupok kami. jk). For now we are still deciding what to do after because we really didn’t expect the results to be like this.
And after an afternoon of contagious idol action, the winners were announced:
Ai-Live – May Dingal as Mei Kousaka
Beat Master- ALIPRO Genki STARS
Mr. Aicon- D. Cross
Ms. Aicon- Jlo Sheen
Congratulations to all the winners and to all the performers as well for giving it their all in this inspiring and spectacular event. We would like to thank the organizers for bringing together fans from all over to enjoy an entire day of nothing but love and appreciation for anime idols. We wish you all well and hope you will follow up your success with the next edition of AICON. We know all the fans out there wish and pray for it.
