A unique showcase of artistry, awareness and talent was on display at UP Tomo-Kai’s Tanikala: A Photo-Haiku Exhibit, last April 10-12 at the AS covered walk in UP Diliman. The event started off UP Tomo-Kai’s 28th Anniversary month and aimed to make people aware of the various forms of confinements that are holding them down through various photos and their haiku descriptions.
Tanikala is a photo-haiku exhibit that aims to provide a venue for people to showcase their creativity through photography and haiku writing.
The Filipino term for chains, ‘Tanikala’ conveys repression and restraint. This exhibit provides an avenue for people to explore their feelings and express their opinions on the social, emotional, psychological, and other forms of repression that they experience, as well as to develop a sense of awareness to people. The photos capture instances of breaking away from socially imposed norms and inspire acceptance and individuality in others.
Tomo-Kai, is holding its 28th Anniversary Month Celebration this April 2019. With a new branding of Iro no Kyoui, meaning Wonders of Color, they are excited to show you a new color of UP Tomo-Kai each year starting with this year’s anniversary month. This year’s theme, Kaihou, which means liberation, release or setting free – aims to empower the audience through different activities and performances showing their appreciation of the uniqueness of two countries.
Tanikala is the organization’s opening offering along with Mulat: An Interactive Exhibit last April 12. Their anniversary month will culminate with live performances, exciting games, food, and Filipino-Japanese culture at Hilway: A Cultural Night, on April 26 at the UP Diliman College of Science Amphitheatre. Watch local performing artists, experience Japanese and Filipino culture and express your freedom in this cultural event. These events are free and open to all..
