The award-winning manga series written and illustrated by Masakazu Ishiguro finally gets its highly anticipated anime adaptation produced by no less than industry-leading studio Production I.G. Tengoku Daimakyo (Heavenly Delusion) is set to debut on Disney+ on April 1, and being given the chance to catch the advance screening, I would definitely gobble up the entire series upon release and invite everyone to watch it too.
Set in ruined landscape of Japan about 15 years after a yet-revealed apocalyptic event, the protagonist Kiruko, had been requested to a younger boy Maru to a place called “Heaven.” Clueless and aimless, Kiruko and Maru set off on a search for this “Heaven,” struggling to subsist while avoiding the “Hiruko,” creatures who hunt humans.
The initial two episodes are rife with adventure, mystery, and science fiction set in this post-cataclysmic world, drawing the viewer in without revealing everything about the world that has changed. The interactions between the characters were fascinating to watch as they deal with the thought-provoking aspects of growing up in an unnatural world.
The art and animation were definitely top-notch, scenes and backgrounds were beautifully rendered in somber colors, as Production I.G. shows why it’s one of the best studios when it comes to animation. Action and fight scenes were remarkable in fluidity as well.
While it has only been a few episodes, I would definitely recommend this title for its mature, provocative themes and deliberate storytelling, complete with action, adventure, and some well-timed light-hearted moments. So make sure to check it out as it debuts on Disney+ this April 1. You won’t be disappointed.
