Making waves as one of the biggest celebrations of geek culture in the country, Cyberzone Geek Con 2024 excited and engaged avid fans of tech and pop culture once again last August 17, 2024 at the mall atrium of SM City Baguio as part of SM Cyberzone’s Cybermonth festivities. With an intense clash of cosplay skills called Cosplay Contenders as its highlight, cosplayers, enthusiasts and mall patrons got to experience a thrilling display of cosplay and the many different fandoms in the hobby community.
Our website has always been grateful to SM Cyberzone for always being supportive of cosplay and their local hobby communities. Cosplayers attended in droves to be a part in the festivities and have fun at Geek Con 2024. This event was part of the many attractions for Cyberzone’s Cybermonth which included the Great Gadget Sale, and Tech Fair, all happening from August 1 to 3. Geek Con 2024 at SM City Baguio saw the registration of participants as they signed up for what promised to be an exciting clash of cosplayers, with over 50,000 pesos in cash prizes and much recognition at stake.
Geek Con 2024 SM City Baguio saw its two sensational guest cosplayers, Jane Yu and Pomponmy, with a Q&A on stage with host, Erwin, as they answered questions about their cosplays, about cosplay as a hobby, and what they would be looking for from the contestants at the cosplay contest that will make them stand out and conquer the competition.
Cosplayers got to impress mall patrons with their colorful and intricate costumes as they went around the many wonderful venues of SM City Baguio. As they came back to the mall atrium, Cosplay Contenders began in earnest with the pre-judging phase of competition under the scrutiny of the board of judges. From the many participants who got to register that day, the Top 16 have been selected by an outstanding panel of judges which included prominent prominent cosplayers Pomponmy, Honey, and arkadymac.com’s Correspondent Jane Yu.
The main program was led by its lively hosts Kenkoy and Erwin as they hyped the crowd and guided the audience to the cosplay spectacle that was about to unfold.
Featured first was the Junior Cosplay Contenders Division for participants aged 13 and below. They got to show off their adorable costumes in their one-minute catwalk. In the end, a champion was chosen and 5,000 pesos was awarded.
Cosplay Contenders was an exciting and challenging cosplay tournament that featured face-offs which got to test the cosplayers’ skill, talent and creativity on stage in front of a huge audience. A pair of cosplayers competed against each other in several rounds, with only one of them advancing into the tournament.
From the Top16, there were down to 8, and then to the Final 4. They then battled in individual catwalks which lasted for a one-minute maximum where they showed their best moves and routines to impress the judges and the audience.
In the end, the top three were chosen, and the awarding ceremony saw them receive huge cash prizes from SM Cyberzone, and the others from the Top 16 got to take home cash prizes as well. The First Placer also got a guaranteed spot to compete at the Cosplay Mania Cup in October.
We are grateful to Cyberzone and SM City Baguio for supporting cosplayers and the cosplay community by giving then a great event and venue where they can showcase their skills and show their love and passion for geek culture, and we look forward to many more such events in the future. We are also happy to see that the Baguio cosplay community is active and thriving and have been supportive of each other.
