Thanks to our good friend Sir Pef, I was able to be part of the media group for Outbreak Missions: Intramuros last Saturday in Manila. It was a unique and exciting event where hundreds of people participated in, making it an event of unprecedented scope as Filipinos have long been fascinated with zombies and the many stories around them and have long wished to have an experience what it would be like if there was a zombie apocalypse in the Philippines.
arkadymac.com was there of course for the zombies who took part in the event. Zombies were folks specifically prepared to be as scary and as “realistic” as undead creatures could get thanks to a skillful team of makeup artists and special effects experts.
Also, participants in the mission are encouraged to wear costumes to make their experience even more exciting, an encouragement that many adventurous folk took with various levels of seriousness and/or enthusiasm.
Stemmed from the 5km Zombie Infested Course of Outbreak Manila, Outbreak Missions: Intramuros was an adrenaline-fueled zombie adventure where survival was dependent on the choices and sacrifices participants made. Survival Missions was not merely a run like the ones that came before it: it became an adventure set in the historic walls of Intramuros.
Participants decide on one of two survival scenarios. Starting from one of the few remaining human outposts, they were tasked to explore several areas with each location leading towards the overall objective. Participants had to look for other survivors, uncover clues, and collect scattered supplies, all the while trying to avoid getting their life flags taken by flesh eating zombies.
Each participant was given a belt with three life flags representing their health. Zombies would attack them along the way to grab them. There were also some points in the game where they were taken away or surrendered. If a participant lost all their lives, they were considered “dead” from the mission. Those who reach the finish line with at least one life was considered “alive” and get a dog tag as proof that they have survived the mission.
Outbreak Missions is a physically-demanding, role-playing adventure. It was really fun and exciting and I was happy just being able to cover it and take some photos of this great event. I was awake all evening and all early morning for this one but it was all worth it. It was definitely an experience I won’t soon forget. Hope to see you at another Outbreak event in the future.
