arkadymac.com was there to cover the Epic Launch event of ToyCon 2014 last weekend, May 31, 2014, at Newport Mall, Resorts World Manila. Tagged as the biggest pop culture event in the country, this year’s ToyCon had a great head start as the games and hobbies community gathered to enjoy and have a taste of what this year’s main event will be like.
Organized by Collectibles Unlimited and Resorts World Manila, there were lots of activities and attractions like toys and collectibles exhibits by MaxiCollector, Revoltech, Kotobukiya, NECA, Pinoy Sixth Scale Collectors and Transformers Customizers. Unique exhibits by Toy Kingdom, Filbars, Arigatoys, and Big Boys Toy Store were displayed at the lobby and at the activity area of Newport Mall and were widely enjoyed by everyone. There were also sneak peeks of upcoming movies Guardians of the Galaxy, Transformers 4: Age of Extinction, Rurouni Kenshin Samurai X Part II.
Other attractions included panels and presentations on hot pop culture topics, like Batman’s 75th Anniversary, the world of toy collecting, the latest in gaming, cosplay groups and costume-making. All throughout the program there were special performances from guest bands, singers, and dance groups who kept the crowd entertained with theri talents. The official press conference started later that afternoon with the release of the official ToyCon 2014 poster, new announcements regarding the main event in June, and discussions of a different venue for ToyCon events next year with Resorts World Manila’s announcement of the opening of a new ballroom said to be the biggest in Asia once it’s completed.
The event also saw the World Cosplay Summit NCR Qualifiers. Three pairs of great cosplayers put on great performances in stunning costumes for the right to qualify for the finals later this June. In the end, the team of Abraham Cruz and Krizdel Ingreso won first place as they performed as Maria and Reinhart from Knights in the Nightmare. There was a tie for second place between the team of Erika Garbin and George Valentin as Lightning and Snow Villers of Final Fantasy XXIII – Lightning Returns, and the team of Karlonne Santos and Samantha Ahorro as Genesis and Minerva from Final Fantasy – Crisis Core. With this development, all three participating groups won the right to qualify for the WCS 2014 Philippine Finals to be held at Toy Con 2014 this June at the Megatrade Halls of SM Megamall.
