Asia’s biggest and longest running convention for toys and hobbies concludes by setting record attendance at Day 3 of TOYCON 2o14 at the SM Megatrade Halls 1, 2 and 3 of SM Megamall. Thousands of people trooped to partake and enjoy what is definitely one of the biggest pop culture event of the year, and we at arkadymac.com are glad to be part of the media team bringing you the action.
We were of course overwhelmed with the amazing number of exhibitors and retailers who had their merchandise already on display. Collectors and enthusiasts will surely be pleased with the bewildering number of toys and other collectibles on display and for sale. The organizers weren’t kidding when they said that TOYCON would have the biggest exhibitor floor of all pop culture merchandise in terms of apparel, collectibles and memorabilia, graphic novels and comics, cosplay paraphernalia, and toys. One could literally spend most of the day just browsing through the many rare, unique and amazing merchandise on display or for sale at the best prices around. Also to rave about are the great gaming companies featuring their hit and up-and-coming games. Be sure to visit them for free trials and lots of freebies. Throughout the day, exhibits and features by chosen exhibitors were showcased at the event as people kept pouring in to partake in the many sights TOYCON had to offer.
Highlights of the festivities included the World Cosplay Summit Philippines, hosted by the world’s most prominent cosplayer, Ms. Alodia Gosiengfiao. Five teams from Manila and Davao, winning the right to compete by qualifying at their respective legs of the tournament, performed on stage in front of an awestruck crowd with their marvelously crafted armor and weapons. Although they all had what it took to be the champions, in the end, a team from Davao, Sora No Katsuo, composed of Matsu Bernales and Angeleah Mejo, was named the champion, earning the right to be the second team to officially represent the country to the World Cosplay Summit to be held in Nagoya, Japan later this year. Also part of the program was the team cosplay competition and the JFashion contest.
Donning a Maleficient inspired ensemble, Ms. Alodia Gosiengfiao was at her booth where she had a meet-and-greet session with her legions of adoring fans. They took photos with her, had their items signed, shook her hand and chat with her. It was an experience like no other as Alodia brought excitement and electricity to TOYCON 2014.
Day 2 also saw special performances from great groups made the day lively, which included sets by talented bands and dance groups.
TOYCON 2014 was easily a runaway hit, setting record attendance. It was a rather organized and orderly event thanks to the people behind the scenes such as the folks from Anime Alliance, and even though there were lots of attendees, it was peaceful for the most part. Looking forward to their next event on December with Christmas Toy Fair 2014 on Dec 12-14 at Megatrade Hall 2 of SM Megamall.
