After our coverage of the Cool Japan 2015 event with our team, we whisked our Cosplay Model and Correspondent Ami for a quick photoshoot. All of us have been covering so many conventions, with Ami reporting for the biggest cosplay events for us, that her own feature for the website had been long overdue. Presenting our Cosplay Model Ami for her first online feature for arkadymac.com.
Bubbly, friendly and approachable as she cosplays at events, one wouldn’t imagine Ami having any worries at all. “My parents don’t really approve of me cosplaying ever since grade school, so this has become my secret life,” she admits. “But it’s through cosplay that I get to really express myself and show my love for anime. So here I am.”
For our feature she decided to cosplay the idol version of Mirai Kuriyama, the heroine of popular light novel and anime series Kyoukai no Kanata. “I admire Mirai. Despite being cute she can be really fierce when she has to fight.” We ask her what she thinks she has in common with Mirai. “We both wear glasses, and we can be both very clumsy,” she laughs. “I’m like her in a way that even if I have some heavy burden in my heart, I don’t want others to get affected. I’ll always look out for my loved ones. I don’t want them getting hurt.”
“Cosplaying Mirai is challenging,” Ami admits as we ask her if portraying her was difficult. “It’s so hard to be moe.”
“I started cosplaying when I was in college,” she replies when we got curious about how she got started. “I tried costripping during one of the Otaku Urule’s IOPs. I had fun being Tenten of Naruto.” We then ask her her fondest memory of cosplay. “It was when I went to a convention for the first time. I cosplayed Mio of K-ON! I had so much fun being with so many people while cosplaying. The excitement and joy that I felt then couldn’t be really put into words. It has since been one of my most cherished memories.”
On her days off working for a living, Ami has other things besides cosplay that keeps her preoccupied. “Food. I love food. I’m always on a lookout for places with good food,” she tells us. “I try to be adventurous. I go mountain climbing, sight seeing, spelunking or road tripping whenever I can. I don’t miss out on watching anime and playing games though. Oh, singing and dancing are my passions. I used to be in a band. I want to be a pop star someday,” she laughs again.
As she has been cosplaying for a while now, we ask her why she still does it. “Getting a cosplay right can be challenging, and the way you pose and the way you portray your character won’t always please everyone. But cosplay lets me live out my secret life, having fun meeting new friends and interacting with different kinds of people. I always find it interesting how people who know me react when they see me wearing a costume for the first time. Those thing make me continue cosplaying.”
We got to recruit Ami early this year. Since then she has joined us in our coverages of some of the biggest cosplay events of 2015 as our correspondent.
We then give her the chance have some parting words. “Thank you to everyone who has supported me, Emman because he always helps me with my props and everything else. He keeps on encouraging me to cosplay more. To all of you out there, nothing is impossible. Just have some trust and faith in yourself. Work hard work but don’t forget to have fun and enjoy your life to the fullest because we only live once. See you around, and thank you.
We would like to thank everyone for viewing this feature, and we hope you can continue supporting Ami in all her endeavors and as a member of the arkadymac.com team.
