All aBOARD EXPO 2026, the Philippines’ premier board gaming event and Southeast Asia’s largest, is set to deliver more than just tabletop entertainment as it unveils a powerful lineup of workshops and talks led by some of the most respected names in the global industry.
From reimagining classrooms through games to mastering the art of illustration and learning directly from internationally acclaimed designers, this year’s programming reinforces the Expo’s role as a platform for learning, creativity, and professional growth.
“This isn’t just about playing games,” said Hans Fernandez, Chief Meeple of Gaming Library. “It’s about understanding the thought, creativity, and collaboration behind them. When people begin to appreciate the design process, they also begin to see how games can develop critical thinking, communication, and even real-world skills that go far beyond the table.”
The Secret Life of Board Games: Inside the Design Process
At the heart of this year’s programming is the highly anticipated Game Design Panel: The Secret Life of Board Games, bringing together an exceptional roster of international designers: Anthony Perone, Colby Dauch, Emerson Matsuuchi, Randy Flynn, Rob Daviau, and Yohan Goh.
The session offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how modern board games are created. From early concepts and rough prototypes to the many iterations required before publication, the panel reveals the often unseen process behind game development. Attendees will gain insight into the creative decisions, challenges, and refinements that shape the games they love, offering a deeper appreciation of tabletop as both craft and discipline.
More than just a talk, the panel invites participants to see games through a new lens—revealing the intentional craftsmanship behind every mechanic, theme, and component.

From Concept to Card: The Art of Tabletop Illustration
Complementing game design is “From Concept to Card: The Art of Tabletop Illustration,” a workshop dedicated to the visual storytelling behind board games. As the tabletop industry continues to evolve, illustration has become a defining element in shaping player experience and immersion. This session offers aspiring and professional artists a rare opportunity to learn directly from two leading figures in the field.
International illustrator Maeva Da Silva, known for her work on Harmonies and Dixit Disney, will guide participants through her creative process, from interpreting game design concepts to developing a distinct artistic voice. Joining her is David Esbrí of Devir Games, a veteran of the tabletop industry whose experience spans illustration, game design, creative direction, and publishing. Together, they will provide both artistic and professional insights, including portfolio development and how to present work effectively to publishers. This workshop is presented by Power Mac.
Reimagining Education Through Game-Based Learning
Educators and school leaders can explore innovative teaching approaches in “Reimagining Education Through Game-Based Learning,” a workshop by South Korea’s leading publisher Happy Baobab.
Focused on transforming classrooms into engaging, interactive learning environments, the session introduces practical strategies for using games to enhance participation, collaboration, and critical thinking among students.
This year’s workshop features Hana Cho, Grand Prize Winner of the 2025 Teacher’s Game Literacy Competition and recipient of the Prime Minister’s Commendation Award. As a lecturer and researcher, Cho brings proven, classroom-tested methodologies that educators can immediately apply in their teaching practice.

Designer Feedback Lab: Practice, Refine, and Grow
Rounding out the workshop series is the Designer Feedback Lab, an interactive session tailored for aspiring board game designers seeking to refine how they present and develop their ideas. Unlike traditional pitch events, the lab is structured as a guided practice environment—emphasizing mentorship, iteration, and constructive feedback rather than evaluation.
Led by international designers Anthony Perone and Emerson Matsuuchi, the lab offers a supportive environment where participants can walk through their ideas, receive expert feedback, and strengthen their “game talk.” Unlike traditional pitch sessions, the focus is on learning, iteration, and clarity—not evaluation.
Drawing from their experience designing and developing games for global audiences, both mentors will provide actionable insights on improving concepts, identifying unique strengths, and effectively presenting ideas within the industry.
All workshops and talks are part of the All aBOARD EXPO 2026 experience. Attendees are reminded that separate workshop registration is required, and Expo entrance tickets must also be secured to access the venue.
Slots are limited across all sessions, and early registration is highly encouraged.
