A two-week long cultural celebration in UP Diliman featuring exhibits, performances, and a concert festival, expressing gratitude for the 36 years of Filipino-Japanese friendship

UP Tomo-Kai, formally known as the UP Philippines-Japan Friendship Club, proudly announces the celebration of its 36th anniversary. This year’s theme, “美月 (MiTsuki): A SalaMatsuri of Moonlit Reverie,” is inspired by the Japanese Tsukimi (月見) or moon-viewing festival, symbolizing gratitude for the bountiful years of friendship and cultural exchange that have shaped the organization since its founding in 1990.
The anniversary will be a two-week celebration held from May 5 to 15 at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Featuring cultural exhibits and festivities, MiTsuki highlights the enduring bond between the Philippines and Japan while honoring the organization’s rich history and growing community.
Experience the organization’s journey through “Sulyap: A UP Tomo-Kai Heritage Exhibit,” happening from May 5-8, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This four-day exhibit will showcase the organization’s milestones, initiatives, and cultural exchanges. Guests can also explore a special Tsukimi-themed exhibit, contribute to an ema (絵馬) wishing board, symbolizing shared aspirations and gratitude, and witness cultural dance performances at the opening and closing of the exhibit.
For UP Tomo-Kai’s Alumni, reconnect and celebrate with the organization in “Tanglaw: An Alumni Homecoming and Mems’ Night” on May 9, 2026. This special evening is dedicated to honoring the alumni, members, as well as exchange students through performances, games, and a shared appreciation of the friendships formed over the years.

Engage with Filipino and Japanese traditions in “Tanawin: An Interactive Cultural Exhibit” on May 13, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The exhibit will feature cultural exhibits and performances, alongside booths and talks that promote deeper understanding of both cultures. Exchange students will also participate by showcasing their own culture.

Revel in celebration under the moonlight in MiTsuki’s culminating event, “Liwanari: A Concert Festival and Culminight,” at the GIMENEZ GALLERY, UP DILIMAN, on May 15, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This grand festival will feature performances from cultural groups, J-pop-inspired acts, and independent artists, such as JOSHUA KIM, AIDORU CESS, PROJECT: MATERIA, and many more amazing acts! Guests can also enjoy food concessionaires, explore artist alleys, and engage in interactive cultural booths, bringing together the energy of a Japanese matsuri and a Filipino fiesta in one festive experience.
MiTsuki: A SalaMatsuri of Moonlit Reverie is not only a celebration of UP Tomo-Kai’s 36th anniversary but also a heartfelt expression of gratitude to the communities, cultures, and connections that continue to define the organization.
