The Philippine Cosplay Convention had been my favorite yearly event since I began cosplaying and blogging, so even if we had never been asked to be their media partners I made sure to make time to drop by to, more than anything, just enjoy myself as a cosplayer with many others who share the same passion. Sharing this sentiment were thousands of other cosplayers who look forward to PCC because it had consistently been one of the most exciting events each year.
The Philippine Cosplay Convention is an event that celebrates cosplay of all kinds and genres. One gets to really see and enjoy the most unique, most creative, and most up-to-date cosplays portrayed by amazing cosplayers from all over the Philippines. It’s a free event at a venue that was fun, open, and accommodating. The staff and security are particularly courteous and respectful. If it isn’t obvious yet, I like attending PCC.
With us at the event are our Cosplay Models Nicole and Nicolette and Aimee who helped us with our coverage.
We were glad to have our good friend Carina join our coverage too as CC from Code Geass.
Our partners at Blue Pirate Channel were also there filming footage, so watch out for their video soon.
Security was tight but the security personnel were never pushy or rude. Far from it. They were courteous as they went about carrying out their duties, like the one shown here taping a gun prop so it won’t be mistaken for a real one.
We got to see lots of cosplayers in a great variety of costumes and characters having fun with each other and enjoying interacting with the mall patrons, having lots of photos and selfies with them.
Got to see some amazing group cosplays as well, most of them rousing much feels of nostalgia.
The highlight of the event was the cosplay competition where groups and individuals showed everyone in attendance how much fun and exciting cosplay can be through amazing and amusing performances.
Winners were announced afterwards, most of them newcomers and first-time contestants who couldn’t even believe they won.
Our Cosplay Model Nicole was part of the Arrow cosplay group who won the Group Cosplay category. We would like to congratulate them on a great performance.
One particularly heart-warming thing that happened towards the end of the event was a gentleman who, perhaps overwhelmed and amazed upon seeing so many cosplayers fot the first time, gave away Krispy Kreme donuts for to all cosplayers who dropped by the stall. We have often encountered people who are judgmental of cosplayers, so it was a pleasant surprise that this stranger was kind enough to show his appreciation to cosplayers. We never did get to catch his name. Maybe he just wanted to remain anonymous as he just slipped quietly away after paying thousands of pesos worth of donuts. In any case, we are happy to have been witness to this random act of kindness.
All those being said, this year’s edition of PCC was a bit of a letdown. With reports of troubles surrounding the organization of the event, it was not promoted as vigorously as it should have been and excitement for it waned. The previous three-day event format was whittled down to just one day. The program started early in the afternoon and ended before 6pm. Besides a costume display, there were none of the usual booths. 60 cosplayers joined the cosplay competition compared to last year’s 100 plus. Conspicuously absent were most of the usual high-skilled competitors and the well-respected cosplayers. The new cosplayers went about like it was just another event. For us who have been here for years, something felt missing, and the fun and excitement just weren’t there.
Mine was just observation. As I do not have all the facts, I cannot place fault or blame on the organizers. More than anything, I still want to thank them for making PCC happen despite the many difficulties. What I’m concerned about is the future of this long-running annual event. I want both long-timers and and the new generation of cosplayers to look forward to and enjoy this event that has been so enjoyable and memorable for many people.
I just hope that from this setback, organizers can continue to make the Philippine Cosplay Convention one of the biggest and most exciting events next year.
